Dell Vostro 1500

How are people who've ordered recently finding the screens? I've seen a lot of comments about grainy displays and it's putting me off a bit! Thanks!

Tonights my last night with my vostro before it goes off to its new owner, ill be sad to see the thing go, its not given me a moments trouble, the only thing that i wont miss is the horrible blackness of it, after a few years of having weird coloured things, the black was a nice change, but its got old quite quick!

9cell battery
Screen to a higher res

Other than that you wont need to ram, hard-drive, cpu upgrades will you? you dont need a decent(well..for notebooks..) graphics card?

If its for work I would get the highest res screen you can afford to go to, although if you're replacing your desktop and your monitor is VGA you can just plug it into laptop, and your KB+mouse aswell :D
The 9cel battery is worth it really, its only a tenner ;)
The bog standard hardware will easily handle word etc etc

thanks for that. will change the battery and also going for the 1700 as it has a bigger screen, it also has options for a bigger resolution but adding true-life, that worth doing?

the 15" is perfectly fine at 1400x900, Id only get the 1700 if you do want something bigger, or a higher res. No idea about true-life really, best wait for someone with a clue about that :)
Just remember though you dont need to splash for a OTT screen, as you can plug it into your desktop setup, have dual-screen and use your current KB+mouse, dual screens generally increase my productivity on laptop and i can type faster on a full sized keyboard, obviously mouse>touchpad.

One quick question, i havent actually opened up the back of my laptop. How many RAM slots are there? Im thinking of adding an extra 1GB on top of the 2GB I already have. Would i need to get it as 2x512 or would a 1gb stick work?

That's similar to the one I've ordered, for pretty much the same price, except mine's got Vista Business, 3GB RAM and 250GB HDD.

Seems to be a lotta laptop for the money, though I'm still looking at the XPS M1330..

Got my new Vostro on Saturday. Very pleased so far. The screen looks really sharp. Have only tried playing STALKER and Portal so far but both run fine on pretty high settings (first time I've played both, having been out of the PC gaming loop for a few years am pretty impressed with how things have progressed. Absolutely loving Portal).

One very happy customer here :D

/EDIT - One piece of advice -> For Vista x86 users I'd recommend the v171.16 drivers as they seem the most robust from my albeit limited experience

I got my new Vostro 1700 now, very pleased with it. It's massive though. If anyone has any questions about it if they're thinking of getting one then ask away!

Never used Vista before, seems okay enough, not much difference from XP for my uses really so far. I can't get my wireless mouse working though. Anyone know if there's problems with these?

Is there any games I could find for free to try out the graphics card? Haven't played a game on a PC since... the 90s.

Steam is good for games. First thing I downloaded on my new Vostro 1500 was the Orange box. Absolute bargain for the price. Worth it for Portal and Team Fortress 2 alone IMO.

Any idea what the new bios brings to the table?
There is a change log on the download page.

If you have the mounting kit and cable then yes, any of them should work. (Not sure about the 320gb drives, I've heard they are thicker than the standard 2.5" format.)

Mine arrived yesterday. Very good laptop for the money. The Truelife screen is very reflective but looks excellent in the correct lighting.

Well recommended over the Inspiron.
