Dell Vostro 1500

Just about go go ahead and place an order for a Vostro 1500, anything I should be aware of before placing my order, seems good value, but I struggle to keep up with whats the latest deal. Just going for the standard unit at £299 plus Vat brings it to £333 (with 5% coupon),

This still consindered a good deal or am I behind the times ?

if your on a budget then I think thats a good price :) can always upgrade things later if you want such as hdd, ram and cpu

cheers for the reply matey, does seem really good value, when I was looking a few weeks back, the 8400GS and 2GB Ram were all extras that bought the price upto around £420.

Is the 'true life' disaply a worthwhile extra ? I assume that's just the glossy finish type panel ?

Hey guys got my Vostro 1500 today, very impressed so far!

I am going to re-install Vista sometime this afternoon seeing as there is 70 running processes. Shall i use the driver CD that came with, or is it better to download them individually from the Dell site?

It is a superb laptop for the money.

If you're on a budget, then I'd suggest looking at Dell Outlet. You should then be able to get a couple of the extras included whilst paying around the same. Only problem is you don't get free delivery when ordering from the Outlet.

i did ;) dont ask me how but i did

Whats the popular CPU everyone is getting with thier Vostro 1500?

Are they easy to upgrade at a later date? Hows the cpu cooling on them?

I've got a T7500 Core 2 Duo with 4mb L2 cache.

Runs very cool indeed, CoreTemp shows it running about 40C when surfing the net, listening to music, MSN etc. The outside casing barely gets warm.

When stressing both cores to 100%, the temps go up to about 65C.

Thats pretty much the one that I would get tbh. Would be plenty fast for me.

Is the fan pretty quiet when on idle?

As near to silent as makes no difference. Definitely the quietest laptop I've ever used.

Even on full load (eg. encoding) then fan's noise is barely noticeable.

How are people finding the 8600 GT DDR2 256mb for gaming? I'm sorta torn between the Vostro 1500 and the XPS M1530 which has DDR3 vram. However to get an XPS with the 1440*900 screen you're also tied into a blu-ray drive and £999 price tag currently, and there's no XP option. So the Vostro looks to be the better bet and it's cheaper, I was speccing up one for £480 inc vat and delivery with the 8600M GT which is pretty awesome I think.

Anyone tried the likes of Oblivion on theirs? I'm guessing Wow, Sims 2, UT, UT2004 kinda stuff will be fine. How about stuff like Fear, SupCom? Also any opinions on the screens, and am I right in thinking they're only available in black?

Cheers,
Simon.

The gaming performance has been better than expected tbh.

Older games (such as WoW and CoD2) I've been able to run at 1680x1050 and look superb. I have an XB360 and PS3 so haven't tried more recent games as of yet.

Nice one, cheers.

'LPLF300', which is one of the LG/Philips ones I gather. Guess I lucked out.

Very nice screen. :)

got my 1500 today, a day early and luckily i was at home, however mines coming up Generic PnP monitor i have reinstalled from restore disk, but mine appears quite grainy :(
