Derek Chauvin murder trial (Police officer who arrested George Floyd)

When George Floyd is proven to just be a scummy gang banger who took his own life by misadventure, does the world get an apology and reparations for all the damage he has caused?

I suppose if he was cleared on all charges it would cause another black people riot

I think this is way way too far down the line. Just as an example the head of my uni sent an email to all students a few months ago saying it was a "wanton" killing and racist.

I think if Chauvin was cleared it would cause even more problems. They may have to put him away to mitigate any future damage. It's a tough call.

It's not really an anti racism movement is it? it more fight racism with more racism tbh. A black man could walk round a white neighbourhood and feel safe (most of the time) can we say the same if the other way around?

I went cross eyed and quoted the wrong post, damn you 34" ultrawide :p

What's with the thing on this forum where people quote the previous post? Is it incase said person edits the post?

It just shows you're addressing that person directly. More precise than just writing the next post and hoping the two will be linked up by the readers.

Also it means the poster(s) will get a notification showing you intend to engage in a dialogue with them, however fleeting.

Not really a choice of cleared or not, choice of if its manslaughter or worse.

Shouldn't be manslaughter either by the looks of things. It appears there was no intent or recklessness. If Floyd had e.g. a heart attack through an overdose, and Chauvin was doing things by the book and he died, I can't see how it would be manslaughter.

Not fussed with the excuses, he will be jailed. :)

Interesting - the defence wants to make reference to behaviour in a previous arrest - when people were forming perceptions watching the initial footage lots of weight was probs put on "I can't breathe" and him calling out for his mama and generally getting very distressed - we've since learned that he was crying out I can't breathe and was getting distressed well before he was put on the ground. Now it seems there was similar panic/anxiety in a previous arrest:

^^^ that's pretty damning - swallowed drugs that time too, was also uncooperative and getting hysterical, claiming he'd been shot etc...

Puts the behaviour in the clip for this case into context a bit!

Leaving aside whether he is guilty of the charges or not. How is he ever going to get a fair trial? Honestly, I don't think he will if a jury is involved. I think the best thing to do is with 3 judges who have a higher chance of being impartial. They then come to their conclusion individually and whoever gets 2 or above that's the way it goes.

True, though I guess this is one of those cases where if you'd be guaranteed riots etc.. if there was no jury and some judges gave a not-guilty verdict - it would be all about how "the system" is racist/unfair etc.. Though I guess there will be riots regardless.

There's also the crack pipe being taken from his pocket just before they try to get him into the squad car.

I'm sure its nothing. I mean, who doesn't like a nice bit of crack every now and then?

Someone I knew got fired from a high profile position, for saying a much more toned down version of what you said above, his linkedin was then trashed by lunatics. The way people are reacting to this whole thing is really quite alarming. It feels like you can't even discuss it with anyone - without people going off the rails and wanting to axe your entire life.

That said, I watched the full 34 minute bodycam video out of interest yesterday, to see if I could come to a totally clinical, unclouded conclusion on whether I think he's guilty or not, based simply on the video.

I honestly, daren't write my opinion of it down anywhere, the whole conversation is so toxic and riddled with maniacs.

I am now completely retired, I don't use social media, this and a couple of other forums only, my life and my opinions are my own, however misguided some may think them.

People have made their decision. You can show many people the video in full and they'll still say it was a racist killing, because they're too scared of being branded racist themselves. It's safer to say so.

To admit Chavin was innocent and Floyd was nothing but a druggie and that the whole thing was concocted by the media who then incited protests and riots and caused deaths just so they could report them? People will deny such a thing would ever be possible.

isn't the main benefit of the anonymised forum environment that we can at least voice such opinions without fear of a social media-style reprisal?

assuming if you have work/life contacts on here that they don't know your username to associate your posts to.

i've not watched either video, which whilst it makes it tricky to piece together the events via other's observations does at least grant a level of emotional detachment.
