This is also my genuine opinion... it just doesn't "look right"... it's too big and it doesn't fit. The whole beauty of the OCUK logo has always been the simplicity and the fact that it's not just text, it's also an icon... almost flag-like in its' recognisability.
However for me this was simply the best design... clear simplicity and instantly recogniseable:
The above looks like it's always been there, which is the best accolade I can give any entry and would suit any background.
I believe as time wears on people will start to see that the current one just doesn't fit...
Wow! Thanks a lot for your kind comments. It's still on my hard disk (and backed up externally) should Spie ever have a sudden change of heart
Funny enough, the entry that didn't make the final 3 was, although very simplistic, probably the most flexible of all of mine and would fit anywhere. It could even lose the border depending on the use and still work pretty well.
But everyone has very different tastes and to be fair it would be really boring if we all liked the same things in life
This contest was a great idea and it gave a lot of people here an opportunity to have a positive impact on the image of the site. Had Spie gone to a design house then who knows what way the logo would've ended up.
I mean, why leave the design in the hands of only one or two creative minds when you can put it out there to potentially hundreds or even thousands of them? No brainer as far as I am concerned. You only need to look at the variety of logos/ideas on show in this thread.
I would personally like to thank Spie not only for the opportunity to enter the contest, but for the generosity shown in offering prizes to 2nd place (me) and 3rd place (nimz) entries. There was no mention of that at the begining of the contest, and I for one certainly didn't expect it, so thanks a lot, it was very kind.
With regards to the winning entry, I made no comments about it during the contest, as that IMO is bad practise for one designer to comment on anothers work whilst competing.
Now that the contest is over and done with, what I will say is that the winning logo is too clean and modern for the site in it's current state. It is such a big leap forward from the old logo that it has really highlighted how old the site design actually looks. It's a well designed and well presented logo though (Katie didn't half give it the full sales pitch too

)
EDIT - although I first thought it was struggling a little on the black, the more I look at it, the better it's getting, I just think it somehow needs more presence, or maybe just a little more breathing space up there. The OCZ ad seems too in your face and takes a lot away from the logo for me.
So at the moment (IMHO) it isn't really working as it could be and if it was my decision (which of course it's not, as I am not the proud owner of a Ferrari
![Stick Out Tongue :p :p](/styles/default/xenforo/vbSmilies/Normal/tongue.gif)
) the site would have got a facelift prior to the new logo being unveiled.
Once the site has a full facelift (not simply a colour change) I think everyone including myself will see the new logo in a whole new light. I can certainly see it's potential.
