Diablo III to Require Constant Internet Connection

Sounds to me they are just handling the game like an MMO RPG. Where you have to login to access your characters.

With this kind of game I can understand, it does make sense, especially if they are going to have drop in-out co-op etc.

It's by no means ideal, but as they say, it will stop people spawning stuff and editing their characters.

What they need to make sure they have is the ability to reconnect and continue if the line drops, I don't want to get booted back to the start of a dungeon and lose all my progress if my net drops out for a few seconds.

I'm sure it will be just like SC2, where you will have an offline mode.

I have no problem with the proposed system, if it stops hacking. Everyone has an internet connection these days.

There's a difference between this and what Ubisoft do with their single player games. Here, as it states in the article, it's a strong way to combat people hacking loot/character traits & stats etc. for advantages when playing with others online. Ubisofts games like Assassins Creed and the new Driver game etc. don't need to worry about any of this, and so it being there has no benefit for the consumer.

Not entirely happy about it, but at least theres a reason here that I can reluctantly agree is worthy of it being in place.

On release there'll be a crack that removes that. :D

Pointless DRM.

There won't be, as your character is held on the battle.net servers.

It isn't really pointless, and it's not even strictly drm, they are handling the game like an MMO.

Show me any mmo that lets you play without logging in and being online?

I usually don't agree with 'constant connection', but in this case it does make sense.

how does it make sense?

just because they've moved your character save to a server doesn't make it make sense.

but yeah crack in what 3 weeks tops?

This thread will be filled with people trying to justify it, then complaining about Ubisofts DRM.

But that's kinda the way the drm worked with ubisoft's first title, the saves were kept on the ubisoft servers. The crackers had to work out what information was being sent back and forth and decrypt it. What they probably will do is work out the information for each default player, then have it bypassed to your system and not their servers.

I'm sure it will be cracked but it i'm wrong i'll most likely not buy DB3 until it's on the cheap.

meh whats the problem its just like b.net in sc2 - and for the record i see zero problem with ubisofts protection methods either.
its just people getting bent out of shape for the sake of it.

ubisofts worked by the game requesting a bit of info from the server at set points in the game (if it didn't get the info it couldn't carry on as it didn't have it).

which is what made it so hard they had to record every request and answer, if it's just the character you'd think it would be easier.

but no mods really?

I was expecting at least some basic tools for custom dungeons/weapons, but i guess that would at into their profits of selling items and the inevitable dlc.

Sol bets on how long after launch till dlc?

I'm going for under 9 weeks.

fffffuuuuuuuuu!

This is not cool. Why do they think this is ok to do? I bet this is as a result of Ubisoft coming out last week and saying that their DRM works really well. ********.
