I guess the best way to know for sure where PC gaming is going is to look to Nvidia and ATI. They rely on gamers buying their cards for gaming purposes. If they suddenly start downgrading their own specs for cheaper production costs or simply just move on and focus on something else then PC gaming is clearly coming to an end. Not so sure we are fully there yet but give it a few years sure.

Well, they've already been making big moves to promote their GPGPU capabilities, as well as just gaming ones.

Should this MW2 issue be a sign of more to come and if PC gaming did decline to the point where it's over and out for games, I'd dump Windows and get myself a MAC. Always stayed with windows due to one thing and thats my love for PC gaming.
No awsome PC Games = No PC.

The question is, if PC gaming dies and the likes of ATI & NVidia stop making high-end hardware as a result, who's going to provide the graphics hardware for the next generation of consoles?

Whilst the contract for providing graphics hardware for the next generation of XBox or Playstation would no doubt be lucrative, they'll not be able to invest in the R&D necessary to produce such chips on the back of these contracts alone, without a PC market to go after, nor are they likely to "bet the farm" on getting such a contract when they could do all the development work only to see the contract go elsewhere.

I think the answer lies in those wird new processers where the gpu is part of the CPU.

The fact remains that consoles like the XBox have been developed off the back of technology originally developed for PC use. Whilst the PS3 used dedicated hardware designed purely for that console, you only have to look at the pricing of the thing and consequent poor sales next to the XBox to realise that the manufacturers will be reluctant to go down that route again. The bespoke hardware also makes the PS3 a nightmare to develop for compared to the XBox.

Basically, the console manufacturers need PC gaming to survive in order to reduce development costs of both hardware and software.

Found this on the Infinity Ward forums, was posted by someone who appears to be staff there. Gives little bit more info on this IWNet thing

The following applies to Playlists:

- the map: Not directly, though you can vote to skip maps that you dislike. Additionaly, we can update the playlists based on player feedback. (e.g. if people dislike playing Highrise in SD, we can remove it)
- the min players: Each playlist has a minimum and a maximum number of players.
- friendly fire: Also a per playlist setting; hardcore playlists tend to have FF enabled.
- weapons: All weapons are available at all times in all playlists.

To clarify; a Playlist is a set of gametypes, maps and rules (player count, health, friendly fire, gametype, bomb timers, score limit, etc...). So we make the "Search and Destroy" playlist. It's regular SD, 12-16 players, no respawns, etc... Then we can also make a "Hardcore Search and Destroy" playlist. It's SD, 12-16 players, no hud, low health, etc... But we can also make a "Hardcore Team Tactical" playlist. It's got all the standard hardcore rules, but it's 6-12 players, has smaller maps, and the gametypes might be Hardore SD, Elimination TDM, etc...
All of this is stuff we can update very easily.

Private Match:
Pick any map, gametype, and rules that you want. Play with as many or as few people as you want (up to the max limit). People can join in progress as they please. You can't disable specific weapons, but it's your server and if someone isn't playing by your rules you can boot them.

There's also the possibility this will be expanded upon in future patches. (I can't promise this of course, cause that's not my call to make)

And on that note, try to keep in mind that we're not just throwing this whole system out there and then washing our hands of it. We will be watching, playing and evaluating what works and what doesn't. The nice thing about PC vs the other platforms is that it's a lot easier to patch after we ship.

16 player limit. Fun...

How is having multiple different playlists, all with small differences any less confusing than having a multitude of servers all running some different settings?

16 players works well in games like Counterstrike but when your in the middle of a war like in COD you want to feel like it's a war and not a local gang fight!

Imagine storming the beaches with 7 other players.

yeah cod frag fests or getting kill spammed through walls when you spawn is awesome.

16 players lol, so it is a team game yet you can't chose your team. proper LOL. You only have to join a pub (dedi) server on L4D to find out teamplay really doesn't exist!

I did an online survey for this many many months ago, and this was never mentioned. It did mention a matchmaking system, but not in the way that L4D has, and certainly not in the way that consoles use it. I for one have cancelled my pre-order. As part of a clan, this could actually kill a lot of them off. There isnt another viable FPS game coming around soon. CS:S is pretty much dead as a serious platform, and CoD4 is just full of idiots and spam.

Oh dear IW digging themselves even deeper with 16 players.

Thanks for shafting those that made COD succesful by buying COD, COD:UO and COD2 in the early days.

So basically IW have just given us a straight port, even down to the multiplayer. Rather than taking the time to develop a PC version.

well actually no.

Instead of just ripping the tried and tested dedi sever code from their older game they have spent rather a lot of money making this IW.net system (remember this will have cost more to make than just using dedi servers) and will have taken more time to develop.

Which means at some point IW.net is going to have to produce a profit for them.

That's bad news as it means there's going to be more costs that just the game at some point down the line.
