Digg.com - Modern Warfare 2 boycott.

I don't think they're stupid enough to not have known what they were doing, I also don't think the reasons stated are the whole story.

Bingo!

They know what they're doing and it's going to work.

They're making a trade off. 100,000 gamers sign petition to boycott the game. Only 25,000 people actually do it. However, now that they can charge for DLC, they'll make that back and a considerable amount of profit on top.
Not to mention the game can now have a shorter lifespan which forces players to buy the next game, or addon, or whatever they decide to do.

They're not worried about keeping everyone happy. What they are worried about is keeping the *magic number* of people happy in order to maximise profits.

I just took a trip to HMV on my lunch here at work. Went to the games section and it really does pain me to see that the PC gaming section has been reduced to just one side of a rack...not a full rack mind, just like half size rack and yet everywhere else you have PS3, Xbox360, PSP, Wii, etc. I then looked at all the consoles on display and what games were being played. There were 4 Xbox's (2 playing Forza 3 and 2 playing some WWE game). The PS3 that was in the corner was showcasing MW2. It looked hell of a lot similar to MW1 in that the area this guy was playing in was reminiscent to the Broadcast scene.

But I just stood there and looked at the graphics of MW2 and thought 'hmmm yes very interesting' but is it enough to kill PC gaming? Judging by the the small amount of PC games on show, it is highly likely.

10yrs ago, you could in HMV and see a whole range of PC games almost everywhere. Amazing how times have changed and now thanks to IW we're suddenly taking a step back. Thought we were meant to be moving forward into the future?

Petition signed.

I won't be buying MW2 for the single player, 8-10 hours is not going to last me a week, and the multiplayer community was the reason I clocked up 100s of hours in MW1.
I liked going to servers where there were people who were better than me, I got better.
I liked going back to the same servers and realising that my skill levels had increased, and I was now competing (with the same players) on an equal footing or even winning.
I also liked finding quirky server setups, it was refreshing.

I keep thinking the end is coming for PC gaming for me, I want to play PC games because I love the platform and always have, I love having a decent PC and upgrading, but if the games are not there to play then what's the point.

I am still need to be convinced that the majority of their target audience will care about it after the have bought the game. Sure the clan and more hardcore players are upset but how big a share of the market is that? I have no idea.

You aren't giving PC gamers enough credit though ... CS was one of the most successful PC games, with many, many, many clans and communities.
Certain;y a large enough number to have not made it successful had they not played the game and spread the world about it.
Word of mouth is important in making a game popular.

Not to mention the game can now have a shorter lifespan which forces players to buy the next game, or addon, or whatever they decide to do.

Other companies seem to be fine with having a longer lifespan to their games, and in fact try to maintain that lifespan by releasing new content (for free).

I have noticed this to, you could argue the fact it due to etailers and buying games online in places like steam. I want to argue this fact, but deep down I dont think I believe it, I think we are starting to see the end of PC gaming and I dont think itll be more than a couple of years away.:(

The decline of High street shops selling PC games has more to do with us buying them from the internet than anything else.

That's true...but even still looking online you'll often find console games listed before PC games. And don't forget with the way it is now, console games are being released months before their PC counterparts. Obviously for the whole porting or re-doing parts of the game to work with a PC better than a console. Either way PC gamers are getting little attention.

I'm probably gonna end up gettin this on the 360 now.. with a mouse + Keyboard adapter lol..

And this is what they want (maybe not the mouse + Keyboard adapter!) They want to hurd gamers into a closed system so you can't have mods or maps without paying for them.

Ultimately they're in business to make money and they will make far more money if they can sell the console version over the PC version. Most gamers own both consoles and PC's so what do IW do? first they stagger the release date to tempt gamers who can't wait for PC version to opt for the more expensive console game. Now they've crippled one of the biggest plus points of owning the PC version Multiplayer.

If you want to play MW2 your gonna have to play under IW terms and pay for all your mods and DLC on console or PC. I think most game devs (not Valve) see the PC as a lost cause now and it will probably bring a smile to their faces when they hear a PC gamer say "I'm probably gonna end up gettin this on the 360 now" then they can sell lots of DLC.

The worst thing about this generation of console is the advent of DLC. which as created greedy devs!

PC gaming isn't dead and won't be for a while yet. Wow is pc only and always will be, so is Starcraft 2 and Diablo 3. It may take a hit from hardcore, hi-spec FPS fans but that's a small dent in the overall market.

yeah and WoW alone probably makes more money a year than a console franchise does in it's lifetimes.

Other companies yes, however, IW/Activision seem to be all about max profits now and this how they're going to make them.
