I think that people who are unsure about whether this will work need only look at Xbox Live. I've enjoyed many games on Live, lag free with ~16 people, but that's an absolute top limit.

The thing that really annoyed me about what Rob was saying about how this will strengthen the community and bring it together, is that if you look at Xbox Live or PSN, you will see that there is no community. There is no clan scene, nothing. One of my favourite things about games like Counter-Strike is finding a server that regularly has admins on, has a good setup of mani or something similar, friendly players and it just generally fun to play on. That's what community gaming is about and that's precisely what Infinity Ward have removed from their game. It's obviously a move to try and curb piracy, but pray tell, how is removing the incentive to play multiplayer (and thus leaving single player as the only desirable entity) going to stop people from downloading it? :p They've eliminated the whole reason to buy the game! :p

it's a lot harder to notice bad reg with a controler and auto aim.

on a pc it's very noticeable.

Alkso you can bet the host is going to close the server every time he gets killed.

My god not another, last week operation flashpoint, now this, is there anything that will come out this year that wont be ruined, might as well sell my PC and become a console fanboy, thats what they want!

Yeah, good point about the controller actually. But I'm not saying I like the fact they've removed the dedicated server support, I think it's a
shocking decision that whoever made it made it to save themselves some money.

But come on guys, let's be realistic here. The majority of people that buy this game will either be playing it on the consoles, or won't care about this... Can you really blame this business that is for not listening to a minority?

I think we can.
As you say, the majority of people that buy this game won't care about this, or will play console. So changing it has only resulted in them losing out on selling more copies as we, the minority, boycott the game.
Without the hardcore people, I don't think the MP on PC will last nearly as long which will also result in them missing out on longer term sales.

Is there any reason now this game wont be pirated to death? Surely they'll still be punkbuster and some dvd copywriting?

Without dedicated servers, there can be no cracked servers. In order for the matchmaker to allow you to connect, you'll need a valid CD key.

It'll be pirated even more now though just for the SP as they've removed the biggest reason to actually buy the game.

Assuming the game does use CD keys (has it ever been confirmed that it will?), being peer to peer has not stopped FlashPoint or GRID getting pirated and played online afaik

I feel that if they are getting rid of dedicated servers, they should let PC gamers and Console games play together, with auto-aim and stuff disabled.
If you are going to release a consolified PC game, let us play and beat the console users :)

You're assuming there's no way to crack the game and run it with other cracked games through hamachi etc.

Playing Devils Advocate though, the people who would've pirated it for the SP would've done so anyway.

I can sortof sympathise with the developers/publishers in creating a unified platform (no point making dedicated server stuff just for PC) when so many people pirate the games.

Why not make a dedicated server platform for consoles, and allow them to have a 20vs20 battle just like PC gamers can?
Why not unify the platform even more and allow PC and console gamers to play together?

Why dumb down the PC, instead of bringing the console to the same point as the PC?

Because a whole new generation of console owners need to be, to put it lightly, catered for. I'm not going to blame it directly on the Wii but it's a huge coincidence that a whole new level of stupid & simple has been reached since it was released.

MW2 is not going to appear on the Wii though, and the Wii is a completely different market than the 360 and PS3 - it is not aimed at being "the PC replacement", it is aimed at doing what Nintendo have always done, offering light and fun games.

You cannot blame Nintendo, who are not even going after FPS market really, for the failings of Microsoft and Sony with the 360 and PS3.

and the several thousand people who've canceled preorders would have bought it, but may now pirate it.
Yeah but this entitlement factor is what is leading to stuff like this happening.

Under the normal run of things if you don't like something or you are unhappy about a part of it you just don't buy it, you don't have it, and life goes on.

With PC games though it seems peoples natural mentality if they're unhappy about something about the game is "oh Ill just pirate it instead now". Can you not see how illlogical that argument is? If you like it enough to pirate it then why shouldn't you have to pay for it? In the real world if something is too expensive for you - you do without.

It doesn't work like that in anything else - if you order a meal at a restaurant and end up not liking it (but there's nothing actually wrong with it) you don't just decide not to pay for it. If you go and watch a film in the cinema and hate it you're not entitled to a refund, etc.

Again I'm playing Devils Advocate really, I'm no saint but the entitlement logic some people use is totally retarded. You're not entitled to steal something if it's "good enough that it's worth stealing, but not up to your standard to buy".
