Dirt cheap student car

(older ones, yours is ok...ish...prefer the ST250 ;)),InvG

think i should point out i am bashing the older mondeos not the mk4s. i actually like the new ones the old ones are just horrid. my dad had one from work and everything about it screamed poop.

oh dear i have upset the mondeo crew

i would definatly go for a 306 over a 106...

http://search.autotrader.co.uk/es-u...odel=306&min_pr=&max_pr=500&max_mileage=80000

Mondeo crew , a mondeo is no style icon but may i ask what car do you own as you obviously have some kind of amazingly stunning car that runs on your own farts and costs less to produce. Is it a home made aston martin?

and i think the reason mondeos get such a bad rep is that there are loads of old ones about, especially tired mk1's.

You call them crap, compared to what?

EDIT: the car you recommended has been poo poo'd by someone who owns one, so i way say your opinion is not a justified one.

back up opinion? do you have to back up a personal preference?

Well for a discussion forum to work, yes you do.

Don't tell us you hate them. Tell us WHY you hate them and what about the alternative choices make them better for you.

And crap like LOL THE STEREOTYPE doesnt work on 500 quid nails.

at the moment i have a cooper... i dont see what thats got to do with it when we are talking about a 500 quid car.

I have HAD plenty of different cars, peugeot, renault and 1 bmw. my opinion is just based on personal preference, dont take offence because i think a student would be better of with a small hatchback than a big mondeo.

fair enough, but i dont see why not. he could get a 306 hatch or a mondeo, i know what i would prefere as a student.

Well that 306 you posted said 'bodywork average, best to view' which means 'The bodywork on this car is absolutely shafted' so it's hardly a great example.

Generally, for 500 quid, you dont get an awful lot of hatchback. 90% of buyers of cheapo cars want a hatchback, so supply and demand sorts the prices out and means that a 500 quid Mondeo is unloved, unwanted, and waiting for you to buy, enjoy its air conditioning, and pay sod all for it.

is your name psycho sonny? :p (just noticed you edited your post)

Seriously though a mondeo hatchback isnt that big and as i said on the first page a 1.6 is the one to go for if your on a budget..why you ask well a hatchback is only slightly bigger than a 306 and the 1.8 offers only slight economy benefits to a 2.0 but is much less powerful, the 1.6 isn't rapid but is reliable and has enough power to get from a to b, in relative comfort, the insurance also isn't that bad, even though a 306 diesel has one up on it in that respect.

If i were to go the 306 route i would get a 1.4 or a diesel as the 1.6 isn't much quicker than the 1.4 and it is more juicy.

A friend asked me the same question who is a student with £500 to spend about 2 weeks ago. He is now driving a 2.0 zetec mondeo with plenty of electric goodies and in very good nik. This was the best i could do for him when i looked. He also wanted the biggest car he could from the money so the mondeo was a no brainer.

I hate to look a sheep but as has been said. At lower budgets you can always find a mondeo to suit your needs. I cant understand why were are even talking about that crappy 106 let alone comparing it to a mondeo?

Unless the OP is looking for something bigger then the 106 sized car is going to be a perfect start to his driving career.
They made a model called a "Graduate" for god sake, it's designed specifically to be a frugal little car, easy to manoeuvre, be cheap to insure and run on fumes...

The Mondeo IMO doesn't even get close to the idea of what a student should be looking for in a car. It's thirsty, cumbersome (comparatively) and requires a bigger engine to lug the larger bodyshell about with any sort of gusto.
Not what you wnat when you have the equivalent spending power of two baked beans a week

It's certainly not about the STYLE factor, neither of those have any credibility what so ever..

We are talking 500 quid cars and you care about image? No £500 car has an image beyond 'look a crap banger' so get over that right away.

The 106 is slow, pokey, nasty inside, just.. bad.

Muffin has one, he hates it.

How can you use Muffin as an example
He probably knows full well it's utter **** but the emphasis should indeed be on the fact

Thirsty? Not really, plus the average student hardly drives far.

My Mondeo was the ideal companion throughout the first half of my degree. Room for all my mates, ultra reliable, and full of kit. Came in dead handy for helping mates move rooms and stuff as well.
