Dirt cheap student car

another fun and light hearted i see :)

I don't normally rattle on on threads, just put my point across and be done with it
but thought I'd get my teeth into this one. :D

Bored now though and mates have turned up with a bag of PC bits to fix ::rolleyes:

I had a mondeo as my student car (third year) and it was brilliant.

Never broke down, comfy compared to other cars in the price range. And didnt look stupid when turning up to interview places!

My first student car was a ford escort, which only falied when the alternator broke and my garage couldnt fix it right, otherwise an ok car. No way near as good as a Mondeo, but better than an Astra of similar age (1996)

Both cars could fit everything in when moving around, which included a mini fridge (1/2 normal small fridge) and a big 28" CRT tv and two double duvets (i like to keep warm).

How about a bubble shape rover, if looked after properly its pretty good, my flatmate had one and it never went to the garage no matter what abuse it had.

Or you could step down a level and get a poverty spec "super mini".

I know which one i would rather drive around in.

Mondeo - Cheap to buy, reliable, 1.6 is sluggish but does the job, insurance is average.
106 - cheap to buy, reliable apart from electrics (which is good as extras are minimal), 1.5 is sluggish but does the job, insurance is cheapish.

I think you need to weigh up the pros and cons of a few extra quid for a much better car size and comfort wise. I think if your scraping the barrel this much you should get a 125 as i mentioned earlier unless you need a car or wont ride a bike.

Just realised, has the op been back yet?

mk3 astra. cheap to insure, cheap to repair (every scrappy has atleast 5) just cheap motoring really.

The mk3 astra is probably one of the worst cars i have ever had an experience with, they are hateful little cars with suspension like jelly, vauxhalls low point to say the least and that is saying something. note to op you would be better off with the 106.

Pug 106 "Graduate"

Cheap as chips and 65 to the gallon

i have one of these. Been abusing it for 3 years and hasnt given up yet, yes its a crap rattley car, but i like mine, yes i would like something better, but whats the point when i'm at uni and barely do 4000 miles a year. its a fun car to drive, especially in the wet. pitiful performance, cant even call it that, but cheap as chips. tyres are 13 quid a corner for budgets as well.

Fun to drive in the wet with £13 tyres? More like a liability.

They're a good shout. Everyone's so afraid of headgasket failures that they're essentially worthless, yet a car thats better to drive than most small '90s hatches - fairly comfy, nicely designed (but cheap) interior, 100bhp, a shade over 40mpg. Give the cooling system a good checking over and such and they're fine.

They're £13 quid because they are a common size, not because they are crap tyres.
Toyo's on mine are £16 :D

i would have thought its a combo of less rubber as they are small tyres and the fact they are rubbish, but as the cars they fit tend to be small and low powered anything more would be overkill.

EDIT: i paid more for tyres on my pushbike - although they are very good tyres.

Yeah, likewise, have paid upwards of 30 quid for good dowhill tyres before.

derv pug? my mate gets between 40-45 mpg in his td and my mate with a 1.6 gets low to high 30's.

I say if they cost the same get a diesel (pug 306 wise) otherwise get a 1.4 petrol.

EDIT:if you must get a pug.

I was reffering to the 106d specifically, but you could include the the 306, diesel is more to buy, yes they maybe the same cost for the car, but you still ultimatly need to do more miles in the diesel for it to be cheaper.

Also as in the other diesel thread Fox showed that round town, diesels arn't all they are cracked up to be. And they cost more to fix, come on even Fox fixed his Mondeo ;)

And for the tyres it cost me £35 a corner for Conti' Eco-Contact 3's, proper tyes that don't put you in a ditch.
