Dissapointed with the iPhone 5

For £700 not sure how not to be dissapointed with a phone. (can afford it, don't think its worth it)

Better processor - It's a phone not a gaming rig or something I want to render Toy Story 3 on. The 4S is rapid at everything I want a phone to do.

Front Camera - Who ever uses this anyway, plus the one on the 4S is perfectly adequate for functionality like Skype/Facetime.

Better Video Recording - Again the 1080p HD recording of the 4/4S is fantastic already. In fact the camera on the 4S is pretty damn good for a phone. I can't imagine it being much better without venturing into dedicated compact camera territory. In fact I've just been in Thailand and some of the pictures my gf took on her iPhone 4 were as sharp/clear as those I took on my Nikon J1 which is a dedicated mirror-less compact SLR-substitute.

Better Speaker - A phone speaker is always going to sound tinny and shoddy.

Better Battery - Now you've touched on a relevant point, it may be better but it's not anything to get excited about. If it was some awesome battery that lasted days on end then yes, a major point.

Better Screen - Yes it's bigger and more vibrant but it's nothing compared to the jump from the 3GS to the Retina display on the 4 which was groundbreaking. The screen on the 4S is still brilliant.

Lightning - I appreciate it is needed for the future but being digital instead of analogue has little implication for the everyday user right now.

There's just nothing ground breaking about it. It's just slightly 'better' in some departments. I have no problem with people who want to upgrade to have 'the latest and greatest' but I'm sick of hearing people go on about how great it is. Guess what, it ain't.

I'll ignore the chip about being able to afford it.

All above are improvements. When ios7 comes out and gaming for the A7, im sure the 4s will begin to become slow

The ip5 also has Wireless N, on my work wifi I used to get ~8mb/sec download on speed test. Now I get ~30mb/sec. If thats not an improvement, I dont know what is

You said 'it offers nothing more than the 4S other than a larger screen' - Im simply stating there are many improvements - Just like the 4S was an improvement of the 4 and 3GS and improvement of the 3G...

Price wise im not complaining - I paid £529, sold one for £570 to a guy at work and sold my 4S for £350 (new replacement)

LOL, so you're justifying the upgrade by saying the next iPhone will make the 4S seem slow?

The 4S has wireless-N, just not dual-band. I can easily get 20-30mb/s on my 4S.

Personally i think people are stupid spending £700 (or more) on a graphics card just so they can play games at 5000fps or something. Just for the card to be worth £200 6 months down the line

I would rather pay £520 for a 4S and sell it on a year later for £400

If I keep the ip5 in good condition then im sure it will still be worth £400 this time next year

edit - just noticed your username 'koolpc' No doubt you spent £100s on watercooling equipment so you can have a lower cpu temperature and silent machine instead of a £20 quiet fan

I read up to this post.

700 for a phone is way too much. Even more so when you consider that people have been dropping that amount (or a bit less if I'm not mistaken) a year ago. You basically have the same thing, a bit faster and a screen that is a few mm larger.

That deserves 700 quid?

Normally, people will spend (for example) 1k on a computer, and it will serve them a good 5 years. There is a difference.

The people who buy the latest cpu/graphics card etc. each time are just as stupid as people who buy the latest generation phone.

You get little upgrade for a huge price.

Why are people only quoting the price of the 64GB when most people will be buying the £529 16GB.

Selective quoting?

Selective quoting?

Simply because thats the price that has been thrown around mostly.

So for 48GBs more space, you pay 200 pounds? Oh dear!

I'd be scared to be carrying an item of that value with me. Heck, if someone robbed me, I'd be better off him hitting me in the face and feeling than stealing my phone.

Not literally, but the point remains that I would be scared losing that much money on a phone.

Each to their own I guess!

Won't be coming in this thread anymore, as I find it pretty stupid to enter threads just to cause arguments, even though that is what I just did!

As I said, each to their own ;) Hopefully, no phone gets scratched.

I'm not disputing there are improvements, I'm just fed up of hearing people claim how absolutely amazing it is without actually carrying out a proper evaluation on what has changed.

If I were to upgrade I'd be in a similar same boat as you, I'd expect £300-££350 for my 4S and I'd buy the 32GB model at £599. So it would cost me around £250 but I still don't feel compelled to upgrade. I'd rather save that £250 and put it towards a new L lens for my SLR.

LOL, so you're justifying the upgrade by saying the next iPhone will make the 4S seem slow?

Well the 4 > 4s wasnt a massive jump. The 4s > 5 wasnt a massive jump either but it is still noticably quicker. As with all tech as time goes on things get better, it wasnt just the screen thats bigger

Just saying before i got ~8 and now i get around 30 - unless something has changed with the wifi here (which i doubt)

Selling my 4s for £240, the 5 is £39 for me, same price contract but much better value, bit of a no brainer for me, I've actually made profit and paid for at least 4 months of the contract :)

Would you not be better off by keeping your 4S and moving over to a rolling PAYG-monthly contract? I've seen some at £10/month which give you the same as contracts of £40-50 on an 18-24 month contract.

It's funny those who question the price yet their 18/24th month contracts probably surpasses the amount :p

Not entirely relevant when you still need the contract (or PayG's) after paying £700+ on the phone. For the record though, my total contract over the entire length is £240 for 12 months, unlimited calls and texts, and I still think thats too much, so at the very least, I'm consistent. :p

Still, if it makes the OP happy... :)

I'm stunned at the arrogance in here!

I am desperate to change my 4; it's showing signs of dieing now and i've contemplated dropping the cash on a new 5 more than once to own it oitright & inlocked. However moving upto a 5 means:

None of my accessories will work without adapters
My maps app is borked (I'm field based and live in the maps app)
I'm liable to end up with a chipped/dented phone (I also don't have kid gloves)

All of those outweigh any of the benefits for me (don't need more processing power, screen being taller is no use to me and my battery lasts a day, if if doesn't I have a car charger which I'd need to replace!).

People say its better for films, but I watch films on my iPad 3.

Personally I think as the compatibility of the 5 is broken in my home it's a perfect time to try Win 8 & Android.

So I'll have a dabble with them, if they're no good compared to ios I'll jump on a 5s I guess...

I see your point about the adapter(s) that are needed but 8 pin connector is around to stay. Over the next few years im sure millions of 8 pin accessories will be released (along with cheap adapters)

Maps is being updated so it will work

If you go into an Apple shop and ask to open it and check for dints - say you have heard about manufacturer defects and would like to check it in store

Anyone calling the Note 2 a phone needs help :)

Well I got my Galaxy S3. It was sad to remove most of the apps from my iPhone 4 as it is going to my parents but they only need a few.

The S3 isn't bad but there are a immediate few quirks. The screen is pretty much dire vs my i4. It lacks that retina sharpness, but has a good colour saturation to it. After using a retina screen for so long it is quite a shock to the system to adjust to another screen and I admit I am struggling with the S3 screen.

The build quality is laughable. I wish Samsung would just move away from plastic but then again the main reason I didn't go for the i5 was that I wasn't confident of Apple's anodizing processes and the early reports of scratches on the black model.

At the end of the day I always look at hardware and the S3 is sound for all the bits within so I am happy there. Currently running ICS with Nova Launcher and I love it!

Is it really that bad? I've never used an S3 but I would have thought that the higher resolution would have been of more benefit than the 24 PPI difference between it and the 4 series.

It is a true 720p screen yes but it just doesn't have the sharpness my i4 has on text. I think I am just spoilt having the i4/iPad3 with their high PPI screens.
