Divinity Original Sin

I really can't decide on what to play as... I want something high DPS but also fun to play. And I don't know why I'm just struggling with character creation lol.

Any suggestions? I've played the tutorial dungeon twice now (yea, I managed to think it wasn't a tutorial the first time and got annoyed...).

So I'm fairly ok with the game, but just find my characters a bit boring...

My guys are rogue/knight/warrior/caster. First two are the main chars, last two the recruits.

I haste/invis with rogue to sneak behind important targets (enemy casters, archers), charge in with the knight (he is a tank, single weap + shield) and obliterate enemy melees with the warrior and caster.

Makes sense... Very basic and solid grounds for a 4 man group.

How did you find combat with just a rogue and knight to start with?

I am going to hopefully sink in a few hours tonight and finally settle on characters. I think I might copy you.

Also, did you alter any starting spells/skills/attributes or just go as suggested?

Well the tutorial fights are easy and the allies can be recruited in town right away so you don't have to get into fights with just the mains. I did do a bit of exploring/fighting with them and I've noticed that, ultimately, melees are a bit underpowered compared to range due to lack of AOE cc and AOE dmg.
Outside of town there are some groups which number 6-7 enemies, which are very difficult to tackle without ranged support.

My knight had 1 point in the Two-Hand skill (which is now useless), I should have put that into One-hand or shield. He is the only party member with leadership (10% dmg and initiative to everyone else atm) so I want him to have the strongest armour, highest hitpoints and resistances.

I removed the skill from the rogue which gave her double dmg when attacking from sneaking (she can't sneak once she enters combat) and I replaced it with Pet Talk, I think. I didn't touch anything else. Besides, the first skill points and the ones you get in the first 3-4 levels are not very important. Later on, when you choose skills to increase past lvl 2, it's important to stick to a few of those skills as it's harder and harder to increase them ( lvl 2 in skills requires 2 points, lvl 3 requires 3 points and so on).

Ah, so it's no Skyrim where you can get to level 10 in a couple of hours through normal play haha.

Sounds good! About time some restriction came into an RPG where you have to plan things.

Yes, experience is king in this game and most of it comes from quests. They can end as soon as you receive them (zero xp reward), mid way, after you've taken some steps (some xp), or even towards the end (most xp received but not all of it). The sooner a quest ends, the less experience you get so tread carefully and consider all options (I try not to quick save/load before/after each convo etc. as I think it will spoil my fun in the long term).

Well, I will not be playing it just yet as I am in the middle of playing something else atm that I do not want to stop, but I have just fired it up just to see what it is like and I am definitely going to love it.

Not a fan of D&D games, but it looks like this has been stripped of some of the more tedious stuff at least. The little I sampled of the combat seemed really good, and I know I can trust Larian when it comes to the story being at least engaging, and definitely amusing so I am really looking forward to starting it.

Bugger, waited for the GOG release and they want $40 for it (£26).

No thanks.

The guy selling it for £12, how do we know those aren't dodgy Russian keys? The game has regional pricing and I can't see him selling a bunch of copies at a loss. Last time I bought a game from someone who wasn't a shop, it was an Indian key and I wasted my money.

Its well worth the £26 GOG want.

You get sent it as a steam gift that you activate, he probably has friends in Russia who buy it for him and he passes it on for a small profit.

Divinity is region free so can be activated over here.

Not for me! Last game I bought full price I swore never again. Actually the last two I bought full price were turkeys (XCom:EU and GTA V). I am 100% not buying any more games at full price, ever, ever.

I believe one of your party members joined you with the condition that you don't make deals with any demons. ;)

I know how to do it now thanks to a certain quest involving books :p

I highly recommend having a Caster (not sure on the class but it starts with flare, oil and poison) + Ranger as your 2 mains, I had a melee and cleric or something but couldn't get past a certain quest at the start as there wasn't enough variation in my skill sets. I think that was down to me though, because I didn't know one of your companions (Jahan or w/e) could do healing, so in my first save I had a tank, melee + 2 healers lol..

& to the dude who can't settle on what characters to pick, the game gets a lot better as you level and unlock more spells, there is quite a lot of variation from I think lvl 7+.

Gotta say this game looks fantastic, right from the time I saw TB's preview of it I knew it was going to be a goodun. Gotta make sure I finish off Dragon Age before I get this though :o
