Do cyclists have a date with death?

a bicycle doesn't mortally injure people when / if they are hit

Tell that to the guy who posted a link to the article about some guy who was killed by a cyclist.

a bicycle doesn't take up a lot of room on the road.

Yes they do, if you consider the amount of room you need to give them when following/overtaking.

If I feel it is unsafe to overtake, I will put myself right in the middle of the lane so no one can overtake

Picture the scenario - speeding motorist, blind corner, you in the middle of the lane doing 15-20mph.

I think you need to get over yourself, or get back on your bike - you may find you get where you want to quicker!

My bike doesn't have a boot....or do 70mph.

to be honest I wouldnt like to see a group of cyclists doing an avg of 30mph on a footpath.

Seriously though, the road isn't just for cars, it isn't just for you. Get over it.

They don't require more room than a car. Blind corner != one lane corner. An article about someone killed by a cyclist shows you how rare it is, you don't get an article about everyone killed by a car.

As said above. You have to share the road - get over it.

This EvilDreams character has no idea does he. I ride my bike 20 miles every day to work and back and easily average 20+ Mph throughout. Imagine doing that on the pavement? I'd be killing people all over the show. Any way, if you're going as fast as cars are allowed in the city, what does it matter? They shouldn't be over taking you.

I always ride about a metre into the road as it makes cars more aware of you. It is a well known technique used by almost all cyclists. Another reason for riding that far into the road is that you avoid all the debree swept into the gutters - glass, smashed bits of cars and various other crap people leave on the road.

+10000, it is why there needs to be some additions to the driving test which teaches drivers why cyclists do what they do.

I think anyone who is complaining about UK cyclists need to come have a look at French cyclists.

Total mentalists. And there are usually about 10 times more of them about too...

Why? Would you feel emasculated?

Got nothing to do with it. Its just an impractical thing to do. An adult should have more sense, and know better.

You have to stop at red lights too....or do you?

Got nothing to do with it either. Most crossing/junction do not have traffic lights. You just have to stop at vastly more of them if on the footpath. Of course you'd know that if you cycled. You'd be even more aware of it if you cycled on the footpath. So I doubt you do either.

A flimsy tin box is substantially more protection than a stupid hat.

The only end to that line of thinking is drive a tank.

Of course more people will die from heart disease than in traffic accidents.

If I happily sat behind mr. or mrs. cyclist at 10mph, do you think the traffic following me would happily sit behind me doing 10mph too?

Without context that question is meaningless. You could be talking about a single lane road, or a dual lane road, 10 yrds to a junction. Anything tbh.

I am a keen cyclist but I don't do it on the roads. It is for recreation, I want to have fun so I do it in the hills and countryside.

Roads are primarily for cars. Motorbikes also perhaps but it just isn't the right place for a bike, dangerous and too fast for them to keep up. (yes I hate horses on roads awell)

And how is it fun to pedal along a road going so slow everyone goes past you and you have no obsticals or anything, it is just grim.

It is up to them what they do so I am quite happy to leave them to it aslong as they don't scratch my car or slow me down.

I haven't hit one yet but the latter really annoys me. Why the **** do you think it is ok to go 20mph in pairs on a busy road so no one can get past?

It is pure inconsideration for other huiman beings, no less, no more. I always overtake in an aggressive manner when I see this.

There is no mandatory test for cyclists AT ALL. Any moron can get on a bike and cycle it on the road.

I would have thought a pro-cyclist would have shied away from mentioning mandatory tests, licenses etc.

At least they were required to demonstrate that they could drive to a certain standard before being allowed out on the road alone.

This.

You would be surprised by how many people there are on the roads driving with no license ;)

And they should be fined/imprisoned/banned and checked up on. Along with those with no insurance.
