Do you check-in baggage for short-haul/short trips?

Last US trip we managed carry on only for 4 of us, 11 nights and thatvwas packing for mixed weather in April and all my camera stuff. Airline fees are getting stupid. You can typically carry on quite a lot, one for overhead, basically a back pack and another small item.

I travel 3-4 times a month, and nearly always take check in on. Saves dragging a bag about, the wait time for my bag is nearly almost instantly. Also means I have a backpack if I need it on the last day when I'm checked out the hotel.

Also means it's easier to take my running/gym/swimming kit.

Generally just take a carry-on case now if its anything up to a week; although also travel by train a fair bit so I've just got used to having a case with me and not checking anything in!

Doesn't help that Edinburgh Airport is notoriously bad for making you wait forever for hold baggage when your return.

Don't think I've used checked luggage in a long while now as we purely travel with carry on and a rucksack! Although BA did make us check our carry on when we flew to Stockholm earlier this year which was slightly annoying.

We're planning a 3 week visit to the Canadian Rockies in a years time and even for that we're looking at just going with carry on only.

If I had kids then I guess checked is easier for all the additional bits you'd have to bring but as it's just the two of us carry on is all we need!

3 weeks with carry on only? Will you wear the same clothes every day?

As above that’s nuts :D I’m guessing it’s going to be a relatively active 3 weeks? Surely you need different layers for different conditions, a few changes etc  Heck, once you get past needing more than two pairs of shoes it’s tricky fitting everything into a carry-on size

I’m currently on a 3 weeks trip carry on only…the solution really is you have to do your washing at least once during the trip.

Not really an issue, either find a laundrette service in the city or plan to book a place with a washing machine during the 2nd week stay somewhere.

I’ve done both, prefer the laundrette option especially when you can find somewhere cheap.

3 weeks outdoors however is going to stink quite a bit!

Surely you're forever going to the launderette? How many items of clothing can you fit in carry on only?

Depends on the weather of the place i am heading into, i can easily fit at least 10 days of clothing into a carry on, that’s 14 T-shirts, 3 pairs of bottoms, 14 days of underwear and socks and a light jacket.

So you only need to visit the laundrette once in the middle.

This is in one of those small suitcases? Am I missing something because that seems like a lot to fit in a tiny case?!

I think I always over pack, better to be over than under.

As above, shoes throw a spanner in the works.

Per your other post, maybe no shoes? I think I always take a spare pair of shoes/trainers/whatever. Especially if the weather is variable etc. or you're in the great outdoors. Can't get caught out with one pair of absolutely soaked trainers and nothing to change into, for example.

Actually this trip I even brought a pair of leather shoes and my suit! (It being creased is another matter). And I have 10 days of change of clothes on top. Plus 25% of space was taken up by gifts.

14 days of normal T-shirts, another pair of trainers is easy in a carry on case.

I keep all my electronics too in a smaller shoulder bag too. Can always stuff a pair of underwear into that.

Do you have a photograph of this packed suitcase

14 T shirts, 14 boxers, 14 socks, 3 shorts, pair of shoes, suit, toiletries, all taking up 75% of a carry on bag?

Yea right lol

No, I took a suit so it’s 8 items of clothing and a pair of shoes, if I remove the suit and shoes then I can easily fit 7 T-shirt, underwear and socks in its place.

Oh, I still got that jacket!

And then whilst I’m here in this trip I was clothing another set of traditional Moroccan clothing including their shoes! Still fits lol

We're basically travelling around most of the time yes so wouldn't be in one place / area for that long but will plan to do a wash somewhere in the middle so we don't actually need lots and lots of t-shirts etc!

I'll wear my hiking boots on the flight and then just have some light shoes for wearing out in the evening or whatever plus maybe flip flops which don't take that much room!

Can also wear a thicker jacket around the waist on the way if needed and keep something lighter in the luggage.

Will have a small rucksack which my drone will go into and I might not bother bringing my iPad as phones will suffice. Time will tell though - plenty of route planning needs to be done now ...
