Do you check-in baggage for short-haul/short trips?

Guessing it massively depends on what bag youre using.

I’ve got a couple of ospreys that I love but I’ve also got a Track Jack Board Backpack which is awesome for the air travel. I reckon I could possibly get that amount of clothing into that but it’ll a tight squeeze.

The only thing that’s lacking on that bag for me is a bottle holder. Oh and due to the fact the laptop holder is within the back it can be tough to shove a MP/Ipad into it.

And a light jacket

No mention of toiletries though

This is the suitcase.

From top left, to right.
Spare pair of Jeans
Shoes
Jacket
Compression bag of clothes I brought for the gf...even with this included!
Suit - Trousers, Jacket, Shirt, Tie, Belt

2nd row, from left
1 Day's dirty clothes - T-shirt, Underwear
Clean Underwear
Moroccan shoes
Moroccan top and trousers
6 T-shirts
9 pair of socks ( I over did it on the socks)

Then I had some documents and my empty sling bag which I managed to squeeze in as well.

Normally I wouldn't even bring a bag of woman's clothes  nor the Moroccan outfit (was a gift), or the suit. I could EASILY fit 7 more day's of T-shirts, another pair of jeans in it’s place.

To begin packing. I would put all the socks and underwear in the gaps between the 2 metal poles at the bottom. And put a couple inside the shoes.

The strap creates spaces at the edge, where I squeeze in a couple of things, like you can see a electric shaver there at the bottom, or a belt.

Separately, a backpack that fits UNDER the seat in front with the following.

Passport
Toiletries (fits inside that clear plastic bag, which is what I use)
iPad Air
laptop & Steamdeck (not always but I did I with me this time)
Adaptor plug, USB cable, battery bank, Chromecast, keys

Have to say having done carry on last time it was much less stressful.

I had my osprey hikelite 18l and my osprey fairview 40l.

That was for a week in Greenland so lots of cold weather kit.

Losing stuff on the way out would have been trip ending so it was nice not to have to worry.

I often wish they'd get rid of carry on luggage bigger than a regular back pack. Just done 4 flights short haul in 2 days on Embraer 190's and the faff of boarding and de-boarding as the panicked mass look for somewhere to shove their wheely thing.

I checked mine bag because I didn't want to have to drag it from gate to gate at Schipol but as others have said I did have to wait for my bag in baggage claim when I got back to my small regional airport but that was mostly due to the fact the Border Force got all 80+ passengers though passport control through so efficiently and quickly. It took me twice as long to de-ice my car as it did to disembark and leave the airport :-0

I only check things in because of the liquids rule. I don't want to have to buy a hilariously small can of Deoderant at an exorbitant price. If they get rid of that then it would be lovely to not have to wait half an hour for my bags. Think they are supposed to be getting rid of it but I've been hearing that for a while.

I went through the new scanners at Stanstead again recently and it just seems to have made things even slower when going through security. You don't have to take things out of your bags and you can leave things in your pockets and such, sure, but they then spend an eternity looking at the scans as the bags go through.

Stansted is just awful. Only airport I always buy (well company) a security fastpass

The other problem with the liquids rule is that your airport on the way out might have the fancy new scanners but what about the one on the way back or if you have connections etc. It's all a bit ridiculous anyway I'm sure when the liquids restrictions came in they were supposed to be temporary and that was about 20 years ago!

Even when I travel to other continents I still cram everything into my carry on. A bag from Aerolite which is made to the maximum dimensions for BA.
(I also have a small backpack).

Unfortunately even with the new scanners, they are still asking people to take liquids out of their bags and abide by the 100ml rule.
PITA, considering they spent all that money upgrading their scanners, in the hope to reduce queuing time.

I don't see the point. It was originally to stop people bringing liquid explosives on board I believe? But surely 4x 100ml containers of liquid explosive are still gonna do some damage if you mix them up in the toilet? Of course my knowledge of the properties of liquid explosive is based on the plot of Die Hard with a Vengeance which I am sure is completely accurate...

Also not like there aren't several thousand litres of highly flammable liquids available for purchase as soon as you clear security. A few bottles of vodka, some rags and a lighter are going to create quite the mess at 38000ft if the person was so inclined.
