Do you wear earplugs?

Decent earplugs should still allow you to hear what's going on, I've worked in night clubs a lot and always wear ear plugs. Everyone that tries to talk to me just seems to stare blankly until I take them out but it's much much easier to actually hear them over the music with them in as they only filter out the rubbish background noise.

This is true.

Me and my mate bought some at the same time as this one specific club had stupidly over loud speakers and we noticed we woke up with ringing ears.

We could talk almost at normal level in the middle of the dancefloor. The ones I bought were about 8 quid.

This thread has reminded me I need to get new earplugs made!

Coughing up another 150 quid for a set after one was stolen is annoying though.

But with rehearsing each week, plus biking... I'll be deaf before I know it if I don't get a set.

im new to riding but i tried with earplugs and didnt like it, i like to hear whats coming and whats around me if anyone can relate, i wear earplugs at work allday and im not a fan of that either ha

As other people have said, decent earplugs don't block all sound, just the damaging stuff.

I can hear music in my helmet via my headset, and over the top of that and the bit of wind noise that gets through, I can hear police/ambulance sirens before I see them.

If you're new to riding it's something else to get used to, so give it a few weeks when you're riding and not 'thinking' about riding then give them another go. Just make sure they're fitted correctly, see the videos in this thread.

Just bought a trial pack of earplugs from Amazon for a couple of quid.

So far I like the 3M EAR Soft FX a lot (second from left, top row).

Are there any washable ear plugs you can get that last for more than a few times?

No point when a pack of 20 pairs of moldex (middle of the bottom row in participants pic, the 35db ones) are less than 3 quid and each pair will last me a weeks worth of commuting and general riding.

Buy a new pack once every 6 months, job done.

I use the 3M ones second in from top right. Great plugs imo.

They're great, but have you noticed that they sometimes reform too quickly after you roll them, unless they either brand new or cold, making them tricky to insert? Not sure if that's common to all foam-type plugs...

Yes I have and I think it's when they've just got too warm, and soft, before you roll them. I try not to let them get soft from my body heat but this time of year it's hard to keep them cool when out and about.

I use the ones in the little cardboard box, 2nd on the bottom row going from left to right. I got a box of 50 off ebay for about £3 delivered. Although the last 100 miles I haven't worn any.

I also tried the 3M classics and they felt far rougher than anything else in the pack!

I bought the same trial pack about 6 months ago. I was using Howard Leight plugs before then but now use the Orange 3M 1100s. I find the 3M plugs are comfortable for a whole days riding unlike the HLs.

OK, so I gave the 'Mighty Plugs' a try this morning.

Its a bit weird and I'm not sure what I think! The engine sounds louder than with normal foam plugs, but the wind noise seems less. It's a strange sensation because you don't get the muffled feeling of foam plugs. It lets higher frequencies in, so it seems louder, but more natural noise.

They are certainly really comfy as nothing is expanding in your ear canal. I need to give them a go on a longer faster ride to make a proper comparison but they are certainly an interesting option!
