Does a 4850 work in a pci 1.0a?

This is a quote from a similar forum thread on Anandtech about the PCI-E compliancy mode option. "The bios option is called PCIe Compliancy Mode. As mentioned by myocardia, all P35 mobos are PCIe 1.1, this bios option allows the mobo to be compliant with older PCIe versions."

Whats my board have, this has also worried me now, heh ( spec in sig )

I would imagine its 1.1, I cant find anywhere to find out.

well i have rung ocuk and informed me that the ati 4850 wont work in a pci express 1.0a slot mobo.so thats a bummer :(

Conflicting feedback as usual,Wilki says

PCIe 2.0 is backward and forward compatible with PCIe v1.x. Graphic cards and motherboards designed for v2.0 will be able to work with v1.1 and v1.0, and vice versa. In some rare cases it is possible that a PCI-E 2.0 card will not work correctly on a PCI-E 1.0a slot. This is only limited to certain video cards.

So intheory it should work,I might try it out on my older Epox 9NPA+ Ultra(nforce 4 ) PCI Express 1.0a board.

Phew I was well worried then for a moment!! I love my DFI board and have not had it long, and plan to use a 4870 in it (when I upgrade). Glad to read that I'll be ok! Phew!!

I have a 8800GTS 512 (PCI Express 2.0) and it wouldn't work in my old ASrock motherboard, which I believe was PCI Express 1.0.

Sapphire 4850 requirements,

System Requirements

–PCI Express® based PC is required with one X16 lane graphics slot available on the motherboard

–450 Watt or greater power supply with 75 Watt 6-pin PCI Express® power connector recommended (550 Watt and two 6-pin connectors for ATI CrossFireX™ technology in dual mode)

–Certified power supplies are recommended. Refer to http://ati.amd.com/certifiedPSUfor a list of Certified products

–1GB of system memory

–Installation software requires CD-ROM drive

–DVD playback requires DVD drive

–Blu-ray™ / HD DVD playback requires Blu-ray / HD DVD drive

–For a complete ATI CrossFireX™ system, a second ATI Radeon™ HD 4850 graphics card, an ATI CrossFireX Ready motherboard and one ATI CrossFireX Bridge Interconnect cable per board (included) are required.

Looks like might be trial and error,a lot of the older PCI Express 1.0a boards are x16.

Gigabyte 4850 manual only states this,

Minimum System Requirements
• Hardware
- Intel
® Pentium® 4 or AMD Athlon
TM
- 1 GB or more of system memory for best performance
- Optical drive for software installation (CD-ROM or DVD-ROM drive)
- A power supply that provides at least 450-watt. The power supply should be with a
known brand and certified to conform to safety regulations. (For the list of certified power
supplies, go to http://ati.amd.com/certifiedpsu.)
• Operating System
- Windows® Vista
- Windows® XP with Service Pack 2 (SP2)
- Windows® XP Professional x64 Edition
• CrossFireXTM
Configuration
If you are planning on using this graphics card as part of a CrossFireX system, the following
is required:
- A CrossFireX certified motherboard with two PCI Express x16 slots and correct chipset driver
- Two GV-R485-512H-B
- A power supply that provides at least 550-watt to ensure the power supply is designed
to accommodate a high-end graphics card with a peak dissipation above 100-watt. The
power supply should be with a known brand and certified to conform to safety regulations.
(For the list of certified power supplies, go to http://ati.amd.com/certifiedpsu.)

I would think having enough power(ie PSU) for the video card would be the main issue rather then the PCI Express slot,I know my old Epox nforce 4 board is a PCI Express 1.0a (x16 slot).

Also this about the VisionTek 4850 ,

* PCI Express® based PC is required with one X16 lane graphics slot available on the motherboard
* 450 Watt or greater power supply with 75 Watt 6-pin PCI Express® power connector recommended (550 Watt and two 6-pin connectors for ATI CrossFireX™ technology in dual mode)
* Certified power supplies are recommended. Refer to http://ati.amd.com/certifiedPSUfor a list of Certified products
* 1GB of system memory
* Installation software requires CD-ROM drive
* DVD playback requires DVD drive
* Blu-ray™ / HD DVD playback requires Blu-ray / HD DVD drive
* For a complete ATI CrossFireX™ system, a second ATI Radeon™ HD 4850 graphics card, an ATI CrossFireX Ready motherboard and one ATI CrossFireX Bridge Interconnect cable per board (included) are required

Again only hardware requirements it states are the PSU and a PCI Express x16 slot.

Well, my 8800GT and 8800GTS G92 which is pci-e 2 worked fine in it although at the time of 8800GT launch there was some debate then as well.

Pci-e 2 is meant to be a standard so I can't see why a 4850 wouldn't unless ATI broke the standard?

Thanks ;)

It was only when reading on another forum that there could be problems with some older boards I started to panic, I would have been surprised if it never worked. It seems the incompatibility is just on the <1.0a systems.

well i have a decent psu seasonic s12-500w and i know the pci express is x16 for shaw . hmmm gamble or play safe :rolleyes:been trying to sort this carp out for two days now getting irritating.

Here's my abit ip35 pro

It shows v1.0 and v1.0a in bios, I run @ v1.0a 8800gts 640 card

Maybe help

PCI-E 1.0 x16 port #2 In Use @ x16 (Leadtek WinFast PX8800 GTS TDH 640MB Video Adapter)

Ciao

Being v1.0a doesn't seem to be automatically a problem. I just tried my 3870 in an old Asus A8N-SLI, which has the NForce 4 chipset with v1.0a PCIe, and it works fine. Wasted some time playing SupCom when I didn't intend to :)

I can't imagine the 38xx and 48xx cards are any difference as regards slot compatibility.

The Distance Selling Regulations are your friend here! If it doesn't work, then you can send it back for a refund.

I'd be amazed if it doesn't work to be honest....
