Does a 4850 work in a pci 1.0a?

This is a quote from a similar forum thread on Anandtech about the PCI-E compliancy mode option. "The bios option is called PCIe Compliancy Mode. As mentioned by myocardia, all P35 mobos are PCIe 1.1, this bios option allows the mobo to be compliant with older PCIe versions."

if your board is pcie 1.1 it will work no problems. and if an 8800gt works in there, then is no reason for it not to work.

then download gpuz and till me what bandwith value is showing

Your mobo is a P35 chipset so its PCI-E 1.1. PCI-E 2.0 is supposed to be backwards compatible with 1.1 so there shouldn't be any issues.

well i have rung ocuk and informed me that the ati 4850 wont work in a pci express 1.0a slot mobo.so thats a bummer

PCIe 2.0 is backward and forward compatible with PCIe v1.x. Graphic cards and motherboards designed for v2.0 will be able to work with v1.1 and v1.0, and vice versa. In some rare cases it is possible that a PCI-E 2.0 card will not work correctly on a PCI-E 1.0a slot. This is only limited to certain video cards.

So intheory it should work,I might try it out on my older Epox 9NPA+ Ultra(nforce 4 ) PCI Express 1.0a board.

Looks like might be trial and error,a lot of the older PCI Express 1.0a boards are x16.

I would think having enough power(ie PSU) for the video card would be the main issue rather then the PCI Express slot,I know my old Epox nforce 4 board is a PCI Express 1.0a (x16 slot).

Also this about the VisionTek 4850 ,

Again only hardware requirements it states are the PSU and a PCI Express x16 slot.

Well, my 8800GT and 8800GTS G92 which is pci-e 2 worked fine in it although at the time of 8800GT launch there was some debate then as well.

Pci-e 2 is meant to be a standard so I can't see why a 4850 wouldn't unless ATI broke the standard?

It was only when reading on another forum that there could be problems with some older boards I started to panic, I would have been surprised if it never worked. It seems the incompatibility is just on the <1.0a systems.

Being v1.0a doesn't seem to be automatically a problem. I just tried my 3870 in an old Asus A8N-SLI, which has the NForce 4 chipset with v1.0a PCIe, and it works fine. Wasted some time playing SupCom when I didn't intend to

I can't imagine the 38xx and 48xx cards are any difference as regards slot compatibility.

I'd be amazed if it doesn't work to be honest....
