Does driving a certain make/type of car, make you think you own the road ?

so by definition, what you are saying is ... if you drive in the fast lane, you have no respect for the law, no common sense, or no respect for other road users?

It's not a difficult concept, why are you confused? What he's saying is that if you drive in the 'fast' (read outer) lane when not overtaking you have no respect for the law, no common sense, or no respect for other road users.

Comprende?

your still missing the point .... when have you ever had a beemer move over for you in the fast lane, or move over after they shot past you?

never

because it doesnt happen.

Happens often to people behind me, for a start, its nothing more than courtesy to other drivers to pull over again, which is why I do it.

In my experience, people will sit infront of me, and then insist on passing me again, even if I'm just slowly passing them, some kind of herd mentality imo.

I just think "sod 'em" and let the rat racers, race. ;)

Driving a 44ton artic is a completely different ball game in the road ownership stakes, even Range Rover / Land Cruiser / X5 drivers realise it is actually my road........ ;) :D - Sometimes, size is everything.

If you're bothered about the law, why are you doing 80/85mph then?

when did i ever say i was doing 80/85? i asked if it was fast enough, but not once have i stated thats the speed i was travelling

Trojan said:
So why do you sit in the overtaking lane stopping people from going quicker than yourself?

i dont. and i have made that perfectly clear. the point i was making is when drivers get impatient, and just flash you out of the way or intimidate you by driving right up your chuff, even though they can see there is nowhere to pull over to, or that a gap to pull over is some way ahead, especially in busy traffic. This thread was never about driving, more about attitudes and behaviour

Trojan said:
How is my wanting to drive faster than the idiot sat in the overtaking lane a lack of common sense, provided the conditions are good for it?

Whilst we're on the subject as well, how about using your common sense and not getting in the way of faster moving vehicles?

your first sentence in this statement completely vindicates the reason for this thread, and your second just confirms the attitude of a bully with pokey motor.

Trojan said:
Myself doing 90mph+ has no effect on other road users, as long as I do so only when the conditions allow. Rainy weather during rush hour? No chance. Dry, clear weather on an evening? Not a problem at all.

of course it has a bearing on other road users. it doesnt matter about the conditions, but your stopping distance at 90+ is gonna be a helluva lot longer than at 70 or even 80, and that could make the difference between life or death to yourself or others.

But Trojan, let me show that i can bend the knee and apologise to you. This was never meant to wind anyone up, it was only ever meant to be a topical discussion and its been that. it was never a criticism (i am in no position to citicise anyone) its just my opinion.

:)

your opinion was a critism of bmw drivers :p

and lets not go all 'THINK OF THE CHILDREN!!!11 DONT SPEED!!11' as it holds no weight here :p

yes it was, or at least it started out as that, as it was jsut my opinon. but then others added theirs, and it grew to more than that

point taken though

;)

if im a passenger in my housemates S reg fiesta (which she loves) im like "argh i hope no one sees me" but if im in mine (03 civic coupe) im like "woah, look at me everyone!!1"

so basically, what i am asking is, does having a car with a good badge, or a bit of poke, turn you into a prat ?
No. I don't drive our BMW5 any different to our Pug 206.

I find that its the speed of a car which makes me behave in certain ways. If i am in a very fast car then i will feel like i own the road and often carry out manouvers which i may otherwise have not.

Brand has never made a difference at all.

I'm a BMW driver but I still use my indicators and everything !

Ah - but a few issues with this theory:

1) You're a young lady and, as such, are officially a safer driver than men
2) Being the hottie that you are ( :D ), I think a lot of people would forget even if you didn't use your indicators/hog the outside lane, etc.

Failing those ones...

3) All BMW drivers think they use their indicators and everything... ;)

Its a BMW, we think it, it happens. Just because you lot cant see it!

LOL! Awesome. :)

I think it's becoming more commonplace nowadays and pretty much across the spectrum of car manufacturers... the number of times I've had muppets rocketing up behind me in Puntos/Fiestas/Modeos/Volvos/Beemers/Range Rovers/etc when overtaking in the fast lane are too many to count.

Maybe I should have a "back off - I drive like an old biddy" sticker on my bumper. But then, driving 70-75mph on the motorways rarely has me in the outer lane. :(

Well I know I do use them but that comes from riding the bike I guess, if you don't pay attention and use your indicators you soon get squished! :(

/casts mind back to piggymon's accident record while reading the above ;)

the figures don't show that women are safer drivers than men, they show they make fewer claims which isn't the same thing.

*Wohoo suspension lifted!*

Anyway I wouldn't say nice brands make me think that I own the road. If anything when I'm driving an E-Class or 5 series I seem to be more relaxed and laid back and generally slower. Mainly due to the comfort / auto box, fantastic cars :D

Must admit though when I get behind the wheel of a tranny van I turn into a bit of a road hog :p
