Does something need to be done about dogs?

Let's hope so. This "Standard" size Bully was not something I'd want anywhere near kids or other dogs.
Yeah. Not to mention there's a lesser recognised even larger "XXL" variant which will obviously become the new hotness if it somehow escapes the law.

Highly doubt it will escape the ban, once the breed is defined in law to ban it, it will be banned just like the XL and maybe the other variants.

But you understand, without consequences - it doesn't take a high IQ to conclude that the number of uninsured drivers would be much higher, if there were no repercussions.
Consequences generally don't stop people from committing a crime.
They do it because they think the chances of being caught are so low.

I would consider banning various cross breads that would lead to similar types of dogs. Bull terrier x Mastiff, Cane Corso etc.
Breeding anything from unacceptable bloodlines should be outlawed.
That addresses a wide range of health and behavioural issues.

Thank you so this ban will cover all of them or just the XL? The BBC seem to be concentrating solely on the XL.
The American Bully is not recognised by any UK kennel club that I'm aware of, never mind the variants.
They'd first have to define the AB breed, then decide whether XLBs are separate or just a variant of the same breed. Likely it will be just the one AB breed and all its variants.

A ban probably means a decade of infertile Pitt bull attacks.

Kid mauled in his home by a staffie.

Officers said they believed the dog had managed to get out of his owner's home without her knowing
Exactly what happened to the Mrs and our Dog..

The 60-year-old was detained on suspicion of possession of a dog dangerously out of control causing injury.
Well, that sounds sensible.. oddly the police in our case did nothing, except threaten to consider our dog as having being dangerously out of control and risk having him put down if we progressed a complaint..

Another one for my Ban list I'm afraid.

I know.. why we can't all keep tigers either is just beyond belief: :D

Part of me would love a pet tiger..

What exactly qualifies a dog for your Ban list?
Genuine question.
Simple, a combination of:
1. A dog that can't be easily controlled/fought off by an average person if it gets out of control..
2. A dog that features highly in serious/fatal dog attacks
3. That other countries have also banned for similar reasons, i.e. don't wait for dogs to start being a problem if other countries have already been through that..

It took 4 blokes, 3 of which own dogs , 10 minutes to get a staffy to release our dog.. they where horrified how much effort it took, and the power of that dogs jaws, never mind it's ability to stay clamped which they did everything they knew to get it to release was so bad, the entire neighbourhood was absolutely up in arms that dog was allowed back to its owners and living next door to them..

I don't get it... Who is the guy in that picture?
LOL, Apologies, I didn't recognise Brad Pitt.. I thought it was an example of a Pit Bull 'attacking' his owner in the kindest way possible..

Still, A nice tiger picture is always welcome!

Judging by those criteria, we would be needlessly banning loads of dogs

That's potentially a lot of different dogs...

The clamping does take certain techniques, which the average person may not always know, but it's something every Staffy owner should be well versed in.
There's no actual locking going on and most of it is about redirecting the dog's attention, as it will likely be in 'prey' mode.

The return to the owner will be down to the Police assessment of the incident circumstances and whether the dog is deemed to be dangerous.
Dog-on-dog incidents are adjudicated differently.

Yeah, that's Brandy the pit bull, 'attacking' Brad Pitt. A gentle ****-take of Jigger's typo.

Something now needs to be done about these sorts of people.
The attacks are likely bad owner + powerful dog.
But banning powerful dog X doesn't stop powerful dog Y coming in.

Next step is stopping these scum bags (who shouldn't have kids, but that's another thread) from owning any dogs.

But, as we've discussed.. Enforcing is not gonna happen.

Other countries require some breeds / larger dogs to be muzzled in certain situations, bit more proactive than things like insurance to deal with the consequences but still doesn't help with dog escapes and irresponsible owners.
