Does something need to be done about dogs?

The problem with the ban is it doesn't address the problem of bad owners because it requires bad owners to be good owners and muzzle their death machines
yea and they can just move onto another dog breed..
It's not like only one type of dog can be scary and vicious due to it's owner.

Everyone had that one friend in their teens who had a big dog, and whenever you go around their house they decided to think it's fun to get the dog to attack you?
one of my mates had a German Shepherd and would do it every time.....

Never actually bit anyone hard enough to draw blood though just annoying as hell, but you can imagine what that dog must be like around kids if it things lunging at people is normal

Imagine, just imagine going about your daily business, shopping, visiting friends, going for a bike ride, etc., etc., and you end up getting ripped to shreds by these murder dogs. :(

Time for the owners of these dogs to get convicted of manslaughter on these occasions, and get banged up for ten years minimum.

Might just see a change in attitude.

yes some proper responsibility for your dangerous animals

i got myself a spaniel, lots of people said your going to have your work cut out i said naa it will be fine (always had labradors)
OMG yes i do have my work cut out, never actually relised how much work a spaniel could be, and yes we are working on it

cue these XL bullies or similar dogs, the dog does have the genes for aggression and the owners must be made to understand and be acountable for this
im sure most are gentle and loving dogs, but its in the breed

The updated story makes it sound like the puppies mum and dad probably thought they were protecting their pups

Sonia Martin said her mother had been visiting her 11-year-old grandson from her home in Woodford Green, London, at the time of the attack.

Ms Martin, 47, described how her nephew "ran out of the house screaming for help" and said some neighbours grabbed spades to try to "fight off" the dogs. Chief Supt Glen Pavelin, from Essex Police, said the suspect's relationship to Ms Martin - who was a grandmother of eight and great-grandmother of three - was "familial".
Ms Martin described how she received a knock at the door from a local police officer at her home in Chesterfield, Derbyshire, at 22:00 GMT, informing her that her mother was seriously hurt.

"There were adult XL bully dogs in the property, and my mum had raised concerns to the owners about them being dangerous and quite aggressive," she said.

"There were also six puppies."

Ms Martin said she believed the puppies had been fighting, and that her mother had been told by the dog's owner earlier to "put a broom in among them, to distract them".

"That's when she was attacked," she said.

These XL bullies are just lethal, not just their stature and strength, but temperament. There are plenty of big strong dog breeds with safe temperaments..... But something aggressive that is too physically strong to overpower short of having a firearm.

They should all be destroyed, sad to say.

"The police said the breeds are yet to be determined, but the family have claimed they were XL Bully dogs."
"She said her mother - from Woodford Green, London - had previously told the dogs' owner that they were dangerous."
"told MailOnline: 'They were XL Bullies. There were eight of them in the house, six puppies and two adults. None of them neutered, not registered."
"'The owner's words were "no one is going to tell me what to do with my own ******g dogs.""
"'Mum had raised concerns about the dogs, over their breed and their temperament. ""

Scum of the earth breeding dangerous dogs.
Perfect example of why a ban on the breeding of them has been put in place.
Now if only we can put a ban on breeding on humans with alarming social skills or lack of IQ.

Indeed sadly though we have another decade of this nonsense to deal with.

+1

Doesn't help that these dogs seem to attract similarly aggressive people with comparable IQs as owners either. ;)

If one of these things jumps you, you're going down unless you're built like a tank. Then it's game over.

And the RSPCA in their ultimate wisdom seem to come down on the dogs and owners side against neutering or euthanasia. I really do not understand their stance, in my opinion it is cruelty to any animal to be in such a mental state to attack humans or other animals without much warning.

I don't disagree, but how do you achieve that? These "types" aren't the like to have registered their dogs, so the only way they're found out is from the public telling on them.

Yep. Everyone report any that they see. They are an unsafe breed. Proven again and again. How many people getting murdered will it take before these beasts are eradicated from our shores!?

I don't care what anyone says, there is no justification for buying such a dog in the first place. The majority of people who bought them, bought them because they look aggressive. That makes them part guilty in my mind. The shame, though, is that (as per usual) the government have been very slow to react. This conversation would not be happening if they banned them before they were imported.

I am tired of the bickering. The "penalty" for owning such a dog is not that great. If I had my way, all dogs about a certain weight would be muzzled when outside. It would not stop all issues, but it would stop many. Dogs have become scary to non-dog-owners, and that's not acceptable.

That's required by law, it's like saying the problem with the ban on recreational drugs is it requires the bad people to not buy and use them. But that legislation is needed if you want to outlaw drugs, or dangerous dogs etc.. that some people still break the law isn't necessarily an inherent issue with the law. This issue here was more the lack of enforcement, it's only been 3 days since it's come into force and there wasn't action taken against him previously as it wasn't illegal previously, now someone like that can have action taken against them.

I'm all for neutering or euthanasia for them too.

The ban already does that, they're required to be neutered, that a big issue in itself; save for responsible breeders dogs should be neutered, legislating to make it compulsory in the case of this type is useful as unneutered male dogs in general are more likely to attack.
