Does something need to be done about dogs?

We are constantly shying away from the fact that some breeds of dogs were bred, over hundreds of years, to be good at killing... on command in theory, but commands aren't absolute. Their jaws and faces are made for it. So even if they're the bestest boy ever, they are still capable of great damage, very quickly, in the few seconds it takes to cause irreparable harm.

I somewhat agree, but not on all of it.

Many of the traditional larger pure breeds which have very large muscular heads, particularly the Molosser (mastiff type) Rottweillers, German Shepherds etc have been around a very long time, and in recent times they haven't really been implicated in many attacks or killings at all.

If you look at the data though, there is one big thing that stands out: American Bully XL, the other is people crossbreeding things like Staffordshire Bull Terriers, with larger breeds such as Mastiffs etc, where you end up with something a bit dodgy.

I'm not entirely sure how we deal with it though, we could enact legislation to license them or restrict them in certain situations. The problem is, responsible owners will always tick all the boxes, get the license and insurance etc and never be a problem. It's the owners who don't care - who want to weaponise such animals who will drag the entire breed down with them, when something goes wrong.

So I'm not entirely sure how we deal with it, the government are currently too busy adjusting their squirty flowers and clown-shoes, so I don't expect any ideas will come from them.

Those numbers don't add up with the uk population and number of deaths from dog attacks.
Yes they do.

Is that your opinion because you have a dog and it's the most wonderful and loving animal in the world?

Would you still feel that way if a loved one was taken away from you because of a dog?

I think not, destroy them all
You are stupid, ignorant and a horrible Person with that attitude.

I actually think you’re on a windup.You certainly ain’t no whizkid that’s for sure.

So what traumatic experience did Wizzkidy go through to turn him against all dogs?

I grew up with dogs and myself and my wife have a dog now, and he is better behaved than a lot of folks kids and I would trust him a lot more than I would trust most people, and I say this having been attacked by a dog that my parents owned when I was a kid - they had the dog put down as they said if they couldn't trust it with their own family, they certainly couldn't trust it with anyone else, but as it turned out, an investigation revealed a tumour on the brain that was felt to be the reason why the behaviour changed

I do think that maybe more checking needs to be put in place before people can get a dog, and owners need to be held to account over any incident that their dog is involved in. I know that doesn't stop the black market breeding etc, but nothing would ever completely rule out the criminal element of any activity

Yes please, can you help?

Yes, in general dogs are filthy, disgusting and dangerous creatures

It's not very rarely at all, open your eyes.
I bet you are one of these people terrified when you even see a dog. Probably cross the road so you don't have to walk past it.

Then gives their children the same phobias.

I'll walk past the person with a dog, but generally I would just automatically assume the person has chosen the wrong path in life for owning a dog :o

What can I say guys? Dogs are more hassle then they are worth sorry if you do not agree but pussy footing around with licensing or laws just doesn't/isn't working. Someone above said it will just continue to be a problem and that is absolutely true, it will. Nothing I say is gonna change that or your feelings.

So basically, you don't like something other people like, so you think that thing should be eradicated entirely?

Paterson was jailed for 20 years in 2017 for 17 counts of wounding people with intent after he subjected more than 1,000 patients to unnecessary and damaging operations over 14 years.

That is a very odd occurrence. Highly unusual for a number of domesticated dogs (and breeds which are not known for being killers) to suddenly turn on their walker like that.
It's probably natural instinct, if one attacks, others will react.. Dogs seems odd in how they perceive what is or who is a threat.

Do not put dogs in the same category as humans, this is where you are going wrong. Dogs do not have the mental capacity like a human. The world would be a better place without them.
I've documented the dog attack my wife and our dog endured on here, I absolutely would like to see more breeds banned (not killed, just a slow no breeding mandate), but you are being deliberately obtuse.

Dogs have many benefits, mainly to health, mental and physical.. They motivate people to get out of the house, they provide unconditional companionship, many people with austism etc find them an effective coping mechanism and not to mention guide dogs, rescue dogs etc..

Yes they do.

They really don't. We had at least 11 killed by dogs last year and a population of approximately 65m.

American Bully XL sounds like a menu item at Five Guys.

Saying that if the animal can't fit in a hotdog bun then it's a dangerous beast that needs discipline and strong leadership from its owner.

You can't use statistics from just one year, as there are always exceptions.

The statistics @Screeeech provided cover a 20-year period and show that in reality, the chances of being killed by a dog are miniscule. Far below things that people happily do on a daily basis.

Well you can as old data isn't necessarily relevant in the face of an increasing population and differing trends in ownership.
