Does something need to be done about dogs?

Limehouse, London. Again the problem is that there has already been a victim.
There is a video out there of the shooting but it doesnt show the lead up or any victim. One dog is clearly out of control but one has already been shot and the owner is obviously angry. Again, no footage of what happened prior and the twitternazis blaming the met as usual.

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-london-65523821

There's the link, BBC does not report any previous victims.
The report states a person was attacked, police turned up and destroyed two dogs, as they probably should in these situations.

It does not state the breed of dogs, but based on images I have seen of the dogs and person, again the issue is clearly with the owner having dogs he hasn't trained properly or cannot control properly. He didn't even have suitable leads for the control of the dogs. If you cant control your dogs from attacking a person, you should not be able to have a dog.
Its the posters in here who never want to admit responsibility will constantly put blame on the dog and its breed, instead of the scummy owner who has not looked after or trained the dog correctly.

The dogs are large bull terrier breed , you can see in pics from elsewhere. I cant believe it !!!!

Dont want to ID the piece of **** holding them who clearly cannot control them nor has the appropriate gear to control them. If they dont have the right equipment, I doubt they are training or treating them properly either.

Watching the video, it was entirely the fault of the owner.
I do feel sorry for the dogs, and I am sure the onlookers do as well, but really the owner left the police no other choice. I feel sure that had he not been so aggressive it would have ended differently.
They were big dogs, and when the first one lunged at an officer, well, they aren't going to wait and see what happens, of course they shot it.
I am not entirely sure why the second one was shot. It didn't seem to represent a threat, it seemed more confused that the owner ran away and left it. Maybe the police thought that with no owner they are not about to even try. I don't know.
It was interesting the way the onlookers seemed outraged at the police, but I pretty much guarantee you that if a 100lbs+ dog lunged at you, you would pull the trigger.

And the police made a total mess of the second dog, poor animal.

Silly comparing dogs to weapons. Yes. Some people use dogs like that. But tiny minority.
Laws are made to protect the majority from usually an irresponsible minority, why should owning dogs be treated any different ?

Also that video of the dog shooting is hard to watch, but it's completely the fault of the dog owner there

Looked like the second dog was running toward the owner and other police, obviously they can't know what it was going to do, it was dangerously out of control and that is why they shot it.

Yes. Tragic, really. Had the owner concentrated on the dogs rather than being angry, then they would probably be alive right now. Mind you, there is no way one man should be out with two (untrained) dogs of that size.

I watched the video, its pretty horrific, looked like one of the dogs was still moving and I just kept thinking put it out of its misery. The owner was clearly out of it, from twitter apparently he was homeless, it was a complete mess from the start and the police were obviously not trained for this kind of interaction, also there was plenty of shouting going on which will feed the dogs stress levels.

Couldn't tell what dogs they were, looked too big to be staffies, so maybe illegal pit bulls.

Apparently a women was attacked by the dogs so maybe they would have been put to sleep anyway.

Again those things aren't mutually exclusive, this is a really simple logical failure on your part.

Sure enough, they appear to have been the usual dogs of peace/nanny dogs and not chihuahuas... who'd have thought it.

No, the owner was a complete mess from the start, he got the dogs riled up and didn't comply with the police... even though his dogs had just recently attacked a woman and the police were (quite understandably) keen to take them in.

I'm pretty sure the police officer equipped with a shotgun (pay attention now - note that it was not a pistol or submachinegun or carbine) was trained very well for exactly this sort of scenario and you're just being rather clueless as per usual.

The guy got his dogs riled up then deliberately released one of them which immediately lunged at the police... of course it got shot!

They were very likely going to put them down anyway... the lunatic owner perhaps knows this, he knows what his dogs have just done and that the police need to take them in but he's kicking off regardless as that's what scumbags like him do.

When will people learn that when the police say to do something, it's the best idea to do it. They are going to complete their task with or without your help, and getting in their way just makes a bad situation worse.
Any decent owner would be terrified for his dogs at the start of that confrontation, bending over backwards to do things right, to ensure the dogs were not hurt. Oh, no, not this guy. I mean, seriously, how did he think it was going to end?
The guy with the shotgun was excellent. I hate to use the word "excellent" when it comes to killing anything, but in both cases he dispatched the poor thing as cleanly as possible. "Pistol dude" couldn't hit a barn at five paces and really put the second dog through hell. Thank heaven, "shotgun-guy" was backup.

Not watched the video but a pistol vs an animal like that in a situation like that is rarely clean unless you get a lucky or very skilled shot.

 I did say the guy was out of it, he's obviously a pos and should never have had those dogs. I could have worded the bolded sentence better, I'm not familiar with firearms or police tactics, maybe the police did everything correctly, I was just commenting on the situation being a mess which it was.

Its quite amusing you getting so stroppy, nothing wrong with having a difference of opinion and you could just engage like a grown up but instead you just overanalyse everything getting your knickers in a twist.

Is it always the best idea?

That lady that got murdered by a uniformed officer would present some doubt I think.

So you are against doing what the police say in case they intend to murder you? I hate to tell you this, but if they wanted to do that, they would likely do it no matter what your response is.
I know it's daunting to put yourself at the mercy of police demands, but really, there isn't a lot of choice.

"Pistol dude" was happily firing away, and all it did was stress the dog out and make the situation more dangerous. I am not exactly sure why "pistol dude" even shot the second dog, it seemed confused but quiet - until he shot it. The situation got worse the more he shot it. Thank Heaven, "shotgun guy" was there.

Uh there is plenty of choice, I have the right to say no to 'demands'.
When it's something like demanding you don't fly your drone over some woodland, or stop riding your bicycle down a tow path on a Tuesday, or some other debatable minutiae of law, sure - Feel free to go all-out geeky and protest your rights, etc... but when there are armed Police being jolly insistent upon your compliance, it's usually an exceedingly good idea not to start being a nitpicky ******* bell-end about it.

Excercising rights such as StriderX holds dear is what leads to people getting a knee on their neck or an instant weight gain from lead ingestion.

But they die righteously of course ;)

There are exceptions and that's down to personal judgement, thankfully this isn't the US so the police aren't generally armed with firearms so I hardly expect myself to ever be in such a situation unless it's actually serious. That said I am slightly fearful of the path being trodden here so how long this remains true is sadly a mystery rather than impossible as it should be.

Bully breeds ('definitely no pit mixed in the uk versions') need banned, the uptick in dog attacks is just going to increase.
Seeing a huge amount of these when out walking now with owners out of control.
