Dogs off a leash in parks

How do they get them into the park? Carry them from the front door of the house? I think you are overstating the risk somewhat. Far more chance of being hit by a car en route to the park I wouldh ave thought.

Well, I don't know about you, but I supervise mine closely whilst walking, and hold their hands when crossing the road.

The same shouldn't really be necessary when letting them go and have a run around in a wide open playing field, but unfortunately that very quickly loses it's appeal when you're constantly having to watch where they're walking/running (to be fair, it's not just dog ****, there are glass bottles etc. to look out for too, but at least they're slightly more visible!)

Plasterer turned up with his dog this morning. Took me by surprise not really knowing what to say. He's working in a extension to the house, which is currently isolated.
Didn't ask if it was ok, just seemed to think it was normal and acceptable...

Don't chuck your used dog poo bags in trees and even better, use biodegradable ones.

This baffles me. Someone has picked it up, tied it off in a bag, and then litters... falling at the last hurdle.

I'd rather they left the dog poo on the floor, over wrapping it in a non-degradable bag and littering. Off the scales stupid.

It's lead, not leash.

4 Dogs here (and 4 cats) - Just use common sense, assume nothing and keep all your animals under control at all times. I agree lots of people don't do this, but don't tar us all with the same brush.

We have a 3 German Shepard's and 1 springer spaniel. One of the GSD is male and particularly big and strong. When I walk him, he's always on a lead. We have a field that backs on to our house, I don't care if I'm the only one in it, he's on a lead. If he goes to the vets, he's muzzled as a precaution.

Sometimes, I'll use the 50 foot lead, physically tied to me if I want give him some space, otherwise the only time he goes off lead, completely de-restricted is when we hire a fully enclosed field for an hour and run him hard or in our garden. He's trained (By a police dog trainer) and is willing to please, MrsHB and I simply decide not to take any risks, as it's like driving fast. It's not just you but the people around you.

He wears a big reflective yellow jacket with "I NEED SPACE" written on it. I change direction if I see other dogs, I even yell to those who have dogs off lead, i.e. "Please keep your distance" - If they ignore that, it's on them.

There's only so much you can do.

I actually don't see the point in the biodegradable ones, i'm not allowed to chuck them into my biodegradable bin so they have to go in general waste like everything else that's non-recyclable/non-biodegradable.

12 million households have dogs in them, 8 million have children.

Edit, actually, that 12 million is pets. Apparently 24% of adults have a dog, though.

Id hazard more than 24% have kids. And multiple kids vs single dogs.

Learn to handle confrontation then, running off to the internet isn't going to help your issues with dogs.

You're well within your rights to say you don't want his dog on your property.

maybe it stops him feeling the need to rush and get home to check on his dog.

is it really that big a deal? as you say it's isolated, I doubt the guys going to be letting the dog pee and poo inside.

Maybe we should assume someone was supposed to be taking care of his dog but let him down, it was either be late trying to find someone else or bring the dog.

you'd rather the guy bring a dog than not do the work? just give him the benefit of the doubt. if he does a good job was it worth allowing him a simple bit of company ?

So either everyone else lives in places where people are so rich and snobby that they can afford not to care about picking up... or areas so scummy that they let their status dogs **** wherever they like?
I live what's considered a "scum" area, part of where I live is social housing rents even and people do pick up their poop.
even the roughest chav looking people are carrying little black sacks in their pockets.
some talk surprisingly sweet to their dogs probably assuming no one can over hear them :D

That's perhaps a bit much.
Dogs still need proper exercise and unless you can run at dog-sprint speeds, they need time to run free. You just have to find somewhere that they can do this.

Since this is GD - Can I assume the jacket has this wording very clear in numerous different languages, and that you also yell in all the major languages?
It's only right, given how many illegal immigrants don't speak English, you know....!! :p

Ah... so it's the members who live in places where people are too rich to care, then?
In that case, stuff 'em. That's the price they have to pay for choosing to live in fancy places like that! :D

The UK needs more dog parks, in the US, New York anyway they have loads of small dog parks in public parks, so you can take your dog of the lead and not have to worry about other people moaning.

It's not moaning - you just don't, or choose not to get it.

Whilst it's the select few 'allegedly' that cannot be bothered to pick up their dogs poo, it's absolutely everywhere/not everyone appreciates someone else dog.

Moaning or whatever you like to call it then. I was just stating dog parks are good thing and there should be a lot more of them in UK public parks. For the record I don't take my dog of the lead in parks either and I pick up its ****.
Shame there is a lot of dog owners that don't care though.

My dog is better off the lead than on. She has been trained that way though.

Border Collie.

To the OP though have you thought of introducing your kids to dogs? Dogs sense when people are frightened and try to comfort them.

A friend of mine does this with his dogs but they sleep in his van whilst he's working (never had any tools nicked, odd that). expecting to bring them in to someone's house is taking the ****

Thats like wearing a t-shirt with the words "keep away from me unless you want a punch in the face" on it.

You'll be held legally responsible regardless.

Im not so sure. In a court I think I could successfully argue that I’ve taken all reasonable steps necessary to mitigate the risk. If another dog owner is reckless and irresponsible, it has to come down to what is reasonable and fair. I’d hope any judge would take that into consideration. Got any more info on the actual legalities of it?

I know, hence why we rent private space in addition to our garden.

As for language, perhaps instead I should adopt the Team America in distress call sign instead.... ;)
