Domino's Delivery

Mind it's always the little people who tip, when I had spell of delivery driving it was always the single mum types in one bedroom council bedsits that would tip. Never the £60 order 2 nights a week to the £500K detached house at the end of a private road, they would wait for the 50p change.

Single mum needs to get her priorities in order, clearly.

My first job was in McDonald's and I'd wager that was a worse job than driving around delivering pizza, how many tips do you think I got during my time there? I've also never had my delivery on a bicycle, they all drive cars.
He’s talking about delivering on a motorbike, not a bicycle. Given he also gave his experience about riding around in -14C temperatures during periods of inclement weather I’ll wager that your burger flipping antics were decidedly leisurely by comparison :D

Yes, always. I used to deliver for Pizza Hut and it really makes a difference at the end of the night. Usually £1, no more than £2 if it's a really crappy night.

Probably didn’t get tipped because the pizzas were cold.

Never ever had a Dominos probably due to the cost. More so when local places have half price days every week. I wait for those.

Fast food is usually a 'keep the change' affair, assuming I've paid cash, I've no interest in getting a handful of shrapnel back :p

If people are that into throwing additional money at delivery drivers, I drive trucks to many high street retailers so have probably delivered stuff you guys have bought at some point. Fancy sending me some extra money via Paypal?
And so have I.
I once delivered to a high street butcher somewhere below Dereham and as as I pulled up I thought "This'll be handball" - Whatever... So the bloke came out with a barrow and I handballed it on to it.
The Guy then handed me £5 and said "You're the first driver hat hasn't whinged about handballing it"
I told him to keep it as it wasn't that hard but he insisted and then made me a brew !!

Sometimes people DO appreciate what you do.

What if the service is average but the food is above average?

The only reason I go to the restaurant is the food, that's what they provide. The waiters just have to bring the food out. Thatis whatI consider average service. If they do anything above that, i.e. Above their standard job descriptions, I will tip.

Nope. Always pay online with card or PayPal as don't have cash on me.

Plus they all seem to have newer cars than I do, so they can't be doing that bad.

Oh yea, because giving the guy who knocks on the door and says 'pizza' a quid is the height of class. Do you tip the postman too?

Of course I don't tip the postman what an absurd thing to say. Cash doesn't exchange hands with them and they generally provide the service when I'm not even in.

I tip the window cleaner, he charges £8 and I generally pay with a £10 note and tell him to keep the change. I always tip in restaurants, usually 10% but if the service has been really good I'll tip more and if it's been really bad I won't tip (rare).

The people who work delivering for places like Dominos or the local takeaway are generally low paid whether they be young, students or just unskilled workers. A £2 tip is small change to most of us, but to them all those £2's over the week can be a big deal.

I don't grudge it. Why do people grudge it so much? Our society can be very compassionate, but also very selfish.

Actually, this is a prime example:

Why would it matter if they had a better car than you? Bizarre.

It's always about the pecking order of the car you drive. People think they are better than you because they drive a Audi while you drive a Corsa for example.

Is it a self imposed guilt trip when faced with someone doing low grade work as you display an excess of cash?

Must be. Plenty of people doing low paid, low skilled work to benefit you but are not considered eligible for this gifting.

It's harmless. Unless demanded, in which case it's obnoxious.

They're on minimum wage, just like a lot of other people. People who work in jobs that don't afford them the opportunity to get a tip. What is it that makes some monkey delivering a pizza or carrying a plate to a table more deserving of a tip than, for example, an assistant in a clothes store or the guy who picks your order when you order something online?
