Don't Pay UK

Norway is more than 1/3rd the size of England yet has a lower population than London, the smaller the population the more bang per buck renewables have.
@413x I have friends who live in the far north east and in Oslo. The one in the NE pays 0.2p kwh, the one in the south pays similar to what we currently pay.

Helps Norway has an absurd amount of renewables, see below:

They've used their abundant fossil fuels to advance their country. While the UK has sold it all off.

Yeah I was in the North and I couldn't believe it!

Our country is a joke.

It's not the amount that's important it's the ratio of the renewables to the amount of people who use them.

I.E If the UK had the population of Norway then we could have stopped using fossil fuels for electricity generation decades ago as our nuclear grid at it's height could have powered the entire country.

recently read the contrary - in 2019 Norway had the highest domestic energy bills in europe, but, overall, lower percentage of their household income (circa 2x that of uk)

I suppose energy delivery companies are now too preoccupied by cap rates and there is no head space for innovative time of use tarifs .... that would be a lesser evil for many.
Lewis whilst evangalising about 'Don't pay' (100K folks) this morning r4today, was reiterating that energy prices should/could be decoupled from gas, which (when the wind is blowing) renewables should provide.

Norway had the same amount of North Sea oil as the UK but with a population of 5 million people, of course their money is going to go much further per capita. There isn't an alternative Universe where the UK could be Norway.

Norway started a sovereign wealth fund. Something Britain didn't do.

I'm not saying the UK couldn't have been wiser with the oil money, what I'm saying is that there isn't a Universe where the UK could've been like Norway if we had made different choices. A sovereign wealth fund wouldn't have made much of a dent in the UK economy since per capita it's a lot less money. The UK didn't have the luxury of sitting on the oil back in the 1980's when it was found.

has the UK ever once planned for the future at any time.

seems to be about selling what we have and letting the next people elected deal with the consequences, then blaming the people who got elected for someone elses mess

Exactly. It had the same resources.
Population, a productive one, shouldn't be a burden. So more population shouldn't be a negative.

We could have created a wealth fund. Used profits from North Sea Etc to Build it. But no. Everything has been sold off.

Tbf another difference is probably that we used most of the North Sea oil & gas for domestic consumption rather than export. So although it was still a benefit to the country it was a bit different in character to countries like Norway that export the majority of their production.

Edit: not denying the UK's lack of long term planning at all though.

Didn’t the guy who lives in Sweden @Efour? Say that the cost for electricity there is about 4p per kw/h?

Scandanavia has large amounts of hydroelectric as does a lot of europe, we by comparison have virtually none despite being noted for being a rainy place (recent exceptions aside). Short termism is all.

We sold off our north sea gas and oil cheap at the behest of the US who wanted to break the OPEC cartel and lower global prices, now its virtually gone we're seeing the consequences. Norway saw it as a long term investment and measured out supply we simply ripped it out of the ground as fast as possible and flogged as much as we could produce with no thought as to the consequences
