Doom Eternal

Rocking up to earth in what is basically a "house-ship" and the so called doom slayers teenager inspired bedroom. The cheesy script and cheesy voice acting (I'm looking at you hell priests), the cheesy "news reporting" on the bridge of the house-ship.

I just cant engage with this game past just shooting and killing stuff which is a shame.

So far I've not done more than watch the first 30 minutes on YouTube but the game just isn't grabbing me - so much of it felt childish and too cheesy even for Doom the ammo limits didn't look fun to play with and so much seemed to be done for the sake of it to the point it actually left me with the impression it was quite bland despite the amount of everything. Despite some awesome looking visuals nothing was grabbing me making me want to play it.

Don't forget this isn't the same id software they were once known for. You'd never see unicorn hats in Quake or Doom under Carmack's watch.

Being a fan of skill based shooters I like the dynamic of ammo limits and how it forces you to work an area tactically. It reminds me a lot of Quake 3 1v1 matches. Sometimes just grabbing the quad straight away is a bad decision. Likewise picking up ammo pickups before you really need to is damaging to your chances.

The chainsaw / flame belch mechanic means you can always get ammo and armour and the ice grenade is really powerful when used in the right circumstances, particularly when combined with some praetor suit upgrades.

I dont have an issue with the gun play really, in fact it's quite a refreshing challenge.

It's just the cartoony approach I cant stand. I hope they never do a Quake reboot!

I respect they have taken the game forward and in some regards I like the implementation. In others it feels very generic and ultimately childish and cheesy.

I'm really disappointed as I was really looking forward to Eternal. I wonder if there will be any community patches to tone down the cheese? :p

I can't really tell without playing it but it seems like it goes too far the other way and makes ammo a chore.

Yes and no. Early in the game it can be tricky. But soon it balances out. Depends how observant you are and how many upgrade crystals you find and use. You can unlock more ammo potential with upgrades and I dont really worry too much about ammo as I have become proficient in all weapons and understand the tactics now. You can conserve tons of ammo by using the right gun and tactics on the right demon. And keep using the chainsaw (combo it with flame belch). But I have also prioritised ammo upgrades and unlocked and used all crystal upgrades I have come across so far in the game (i have just defeated the gladiator boss). No idea how far into the game I am but the only thing killing me now is my my own lack of skill on a pad (I'm playing on PS4 pro on ultra violence).

My gaming laptop hopefully arrives tomorrow though and I'm gonna double dip and pwn some demons with M+KB! :p (yes this game on console/pad has ****** me off that much!)

It's not really the regaining ammo that's the problem to me, it's more about breaking up the running and gunning to chainsaw an enemy and then start it again. I feel like the mechanic of getting ammo back ruins the flow of the fights to me. This goes for glory kills too.

Yeah I can see that. There is a rune to help with glory kills that you unlock fairly early on. But the chainsaw seems to be neglected - I feel the rune could have applied to both and made the flow a bit better.

Starting to get a bit more ****** off with this. Its getting a bit daft. Dying over and over multiple times on each fight. Now on the ice planet, and got this stupid fight in a small room with blood all over the floor. nowhere to move 2 mancubus turn up.

Cue balls kill anything in their blast. Including Mancubi. Indeed if you get the angle right you will take them both down. Use plasma if needed as its fire rate keeps them staggered. If you dont have it already get the multiple rocket lock on for your launcher and upgrade it as far as you can.

Utilise blood punch also.

Have to say, during Cultist Base (I think), the platforming was killing it for me. However, it's subsided since, and the game has really come into its own, I think it's great!

Trying not to rush through it, and just going through previous missions to try and get all the secrets and upgrades!

What difficulty is everyone on? Hurt me Plenty is just right for me at the minute, will take a stab at the next one up when I'm done!

I know but you still need to do them to keep health up and it just ruins the gunplay for me. I understand why they wanted to add in new things but honestly I don't really feel like being tactical and platforming is why a lot of people play Doom.

I'm a big fan of doom since the old days, but getting bored and frustrated with new doom, I was expecting it to be old doom (2016) with bigger maps and more things to kill + better gfx,, maps are only bigger in the sense you can some times see further (but no more to explore).. In fact they feel small.. Old doom was fine without the silly platform style jumps.. I thought carefully times jumps was a pre 2k thing..

See that's kind of how I feel. Doom 2016 was a stress relief game for me, mindless gunning and killing but Eternal is just not that.

New AMD driver installed and HDR now works! I've already completed it so I'll start a new game on an easier difficulty to bask in its warm glowing warming glow. :D

EDIT: The map shows up just fine. Is it still an issue for Nvidia users or have they just fixed it?

Yeah, it's nothing like DOOM 2016, it's too much of a platform/puzzle based game, and the maps just feel too small because of how it's forcing you to jump around everywhere, even in combat.

I got half way through it and I'm really finding the motiviation to go back and finish it, I might force myself at some point when I've got nothing else to play but it got boring very quickly

The interconnected level design isnt as good as 2016, im not the biggest fan of a lot of the platforming sections and theres far too much lore and story crammed in but the combat is f'ing superb, perfectly balances feeling like an unstoppable murder machine with been on the edge of death the entire fight. Completed it on ultra violence, great challenge, will try nightmare next.
Never found ammo to be an issue apart from the first few levels, just upgrade ammo capacity and use the correct tool for the job.
Getting the glory kill upgrade as-well is recomended.

Big DOOM 2016 fan not so much this far to scripted no choice

This weapon is good for this this weapon for that no ammo after two seconds get the chainsaw blah blah

The 2016 nailed it in feel and pace this feels like a backwards step

Gfx have improved but at a cost my frame rate is nearly half what i had in the last game 1070 6700k no option seems to make a difference apart from scaling mud o vision
