Hi,

About 6 months ago our UPVC front door lock decided to stop working. Before that we'd had about 2 months of it being difficult to get the key in and out..but only from the outside. We can lock and unlock it fine from indoors but if we want to go out any where we have to lock it from inside and use the back door.

Now the back door lock has started doing the same thing with the keys being difficult to get in and out from the outside but fine from the inside.

So, it's time to replace them both before I end up using the patio doors :p

How hard is it to do? Figured it's just a case of replacing the barrel but never done anything like this before. Any advice gratefully received :)

This should be in Home & Garden forum but they are a doddle to replace, it's usually just a screw on the inside of the door then they slide out.
Just make sure you get the same length barrels from the shop as they come in all different sizes :)

Just nip down to B&Q, buy the barrel bit, bring your old one for size, while someone is in the house.
Check youtube for exactly how to rotate your key to move the lock, with the door open, you remove one screw, rotate a bit, extract barrel, and then slide in new barrel, rotate, reinsert the screw, job done.

It takes less than a minute.
You can get all sorts, bump resistance, high security etc, a decent lock barrel, might be £20.

And anyone over 30 with a little common sense knows that the graphite needs to be in a pressurised can to enable it to reach the furthest parts of the lock.

Take barrel out,
hold vertically
file in pencil lead

I forgot you young people can't do DIY :p

Lubricate the lock, removing from the door may be easier. If that doesn't fix it then replace with Avocet ABS locks. Don't bother with the DIY stores, either cheap tat or overpriced. These are the barrels that the police are recommending nowadays.

I replaced both the front and back door barrels 6 months ago. Not even a five minute job.

Avocet ABS

Thanks for the info and links etc :D

Looks like i'll be getting this done asap :) defo not water getting in though, both doors are under cover with a car port over the back door and porch over the front but i'll get some spray for the new locks as a precaution :)

Seconding the ABS suggestion. You'll spend the same amount of money buying something flashy from a DIY shed that is nowhere near as secure.

Thirding the ABS locks.

Replaced our front door lock years ago with them. Just had the back door replaced and we ordered an ABS lock suited to the front door. 1 key to rule them all :)

Simple diy tasks never work for me. Couldn't change a mortise lock once as screws kept going round and round. And couldn't get spark plugs out of car other day as in too tight.

I give up doing ****.

The locks are probably fine. Same thing happened to my Yale barrel lock. It's probably due to water condensing inside the lock due to the cold weather. I just gave the lock a good spray with GT85 teflon spray and it was fine after that. Our key was actually stuck in the lock by a few small spots of rust and took a while to remove it.

Even if the barrel is brass, the pins and springs will be steel and these are what get stuck.

Also fourding the ABS locks if you do decide to replace :p. Great locks and a cool looking key.
