Door locks - replacement advice needed

ABS rocks! - was even more surprised to hear that this world class leading lock is made right next to hudds, in brighouse!!

Most window/double glazing sellers sell these aswell - think mine cost about £27 per set.

http://www.abs-secure.co.uk/ - was surprised to see how easy it is to get into a upvc door

This thread has just cost me £147 in new ABS door locks.

At least I only have one key now or will when they come.

Dave

Another one here, who going to be poorer now.:(

I could have got the the ABS cylinders locally, but decided to get them from here, further away the better, don't like buying door cylinders locally.

Also I paid the extra £4 & got the locks cylinders keyed alike, reducing the keys carried from four down to one.:D

I have to thank the OP AHarvey for starting this thread - it made me realise how vunerable the house was after other posters pointed out how rubbish the cheap locks are.

So now I have to thank Barnsley Lock & Safe Co and Parcel Force. - I ordered four locks yesterday at 9.30 ish and they were on my doorstep this morning at 8.30 - 30 min later they are all fitted - Most unexpected bill to pay but seems worth it especially as one key fit's all.

Yep, I'm ordering one of these to replace the old euro Yale lock on my patio doors. Thankfully the rest of my external doors are sold wood with 5-lever mortice locks. Not those flimsy PVC doors that can be kicked in so easy as shown on any Road Wars, Police Interceptors, etc type programme.

I'm going to go out on a limb here and say few burglars carry around a ram and stand in the middle of the street kicking a door down, you're only as secure as your weakest point.
If the doors are difficult to get through they'll find another way.

Just remove the beading from around your window if it's on the outside of frame & remove glazing unit, 20-30 seconds to do.

Yep, only issue with that is weight of the glass.

When it comes to home security you need to protect your house to an appropriate level, i.e. what you have in it, the area its in etc, provided you make your house a less attractive proposition than one down the road then no-one is going to bother, unless you have loads of expensive goods on display......

Last year I bought four new ABS locks from Mightons. I can highly recommend them.

Four locks, all keyed the same and three of them with thumb turns on the inside. Wish I did this years ago.

One word of warning. Make sure you measure up correctly. Just measuring your existing lock may not be good enough. Two of our old locks were offering too much of the lock to the burglar - 8mm in one case.

How much are people paying for their locks?

For 2 cylinders I've been quoted "@ £40 Ea plus vat. We would key them alike for you, and would come with 3 keys".

Just wondering if that's about right.

Once this is done, I've got to design and build a 2 patio door panels as that lock has gone as well, except its the lever system and not the cylinder. Sealed UPVC frame means a complete new window or some rubbish lock replacement system that screws onto the inside of the frame. joy :)

And this one, showing how to measure for correct cylinder length, which is important.

If you have the cheapo hollow alloy handles then a new high security handle set might also be a good idea. The front handle is machined from a solid block, rather than hollow, so much harder to rip it off and harder to get access to the barrel.

The ABS barrel should be enough, but these are certainly worth looking at if you ever get a new door fitted. Can also get them with 3 fixing bolts, rather than the standard 2 bolts.
