Double overtaking

It's not something I would do, as I would think it would be perceived by the first overtaking car as aggressive or inviting a race. Also I'm not sure he would know my intentions - would I be overtaking him too and thus he should slow down? Or am I dropping in behind him and in front of the intially slower car?

As most people who overtake on a single carriageway are of a particularly mindset, I wouldn't be in a rush to do this.

isn't it obvious that the golf that is overtaking wanted to go faster? Wouldn't it have been better to overtake the slower cars then see if the golf would be holding you up? Or was it already holding you up?

And yeh, to the others it would have looked like you were both racing, which is why overtaking is so frowned apron these days, just because you want to go faster than all the others. :(

i would have anticipated pulling him behind him, knowing he wanted to get a move on. I'd only have contemplated overtaking him if i found my speed differential was enough to breeze by him

What is alarming is when your overtaking a number of cars and one of those cars decides to overtake but hasn't chosen to look in the mirror first.

Some chump in a volvo did this to me once and I tensed so hard for the impact I pulled a muscle in my back and had to pull over :)

I was out on a blast and I knew he would be holding me up, even if he was gunning it. This was evident by him being out of sight within half a mile.

I would never, ever follow someone elese on an overtake until they have completed the overtake and are safely on the correct side of the road and I can see a clear exit point for the overtake I am about to make.

There are so many things that could go wrong, he could not overtake as quickly as you'd first thought so you end up stuck waiting for him to complete, he could pull in with a short gap between him and the target car meaning you are forced, whether you have room or not, to overtake him as well (this combined the first point = arghghg).

Sounds like you ought to hurry up and get in that slow normal car :D

thats fine then, might have still been better to complete the first overtake then overtake him in a second manoeuvre he probably (err defiantly) didn't expect to see you coming past after completing a overtake himself. However if you had pulled in behind him, then started a overtake he may have noticed you better?

Or maybe he was just oblivous to things around him and nothing would have helped. :o:p

edit: also agree with fox, but i guess it depends how long the line of sight is, but being blocked to the left and front by cars where would you put the car if something started coming towards you?

Every situation is different i guess. We weren't there so not 100% sure how it looked. I wouldn't have done it, but then I ain't go any damn power :D

Well, its all about anticipation.

The first car in the slow queue was doing about 30MPH, so I could fairly deduce that there would be space to pull in regardless, as it was very unlikely that the Golf was going to overtake then slow back down to less than 30MPH.

What's even more alarming is when you go to overtake someone on an A road and they think it would be really clever to move into the centre of the road and perform an emergency stop in an effort to block you as some absolute lunatic did to me last weekend. I'm still not entirely sure how I kept it out of his back bumper and out of the scenery.

I read stories like this, and find it utterly gobsmacking and almost unbelievable. I've never ever seen such idiocy, and I've never overtaken anyone and been given abuse as a result. If that happened to me.. Well I'm not quite sure what I'd do. Most of me would say I'd keep calm, but..

ive had strange incidents like that before, you find yourself in such a shock, that you dont react in the way you did when you read it on paper.

when you recover from the shock, the moment has passed and they're long gone.

I'm filled with rage just contemplating such a situation - I honestly couldn't predict what I would do if that happened to me.

ive had someone try and barge me off the road by moving over as i got level. But then maybe they just couldnt keep there car in a straight line?

Its as if overtaking them questions there sexuality

I came to a stop diagonally across the road, took a deep breath and decided the best thing to do was to remove myself from the situation. I wanted to go after him but really, what would I have done, rammed him? There was no winning solution for me so I just pulled out.

I would have found it very difficult to not get wound up in that situation Lopez, good on you for driving away from it, sound's like a prized idiot!

The other day there was a line of traffic all doing around 60MPH on this single carriageway, I always leave a bit of a gap on that particular road enough for maybe two small cars, some ******** in a black Focus came tearing up behind me doing about 90, he overtook me, went into the gap in front of me and then slowed back down to 60MPH, totally pointless.
