Double overtaking

Sounds like you wrongly assumed the speed that the Golf would travel at and that he never actually stopped accelerating rather than sped up to stop you getting past.

Personally I never start an overtake without seeing a perfectly clear space between where I am and where I know I can safely pull back in with at least the same distance again to allow for cars coming in the other direction.

I read stories like this, and find it utterly gobsmacking and almost unbelievable. I've never ever seen such idiocy, and I've never overtaken anyone and been given abuse as a result. If that happened to me.. Well I'm not quite sure what I'd do. Most of me would say I'd keep calm, but..

It's because they see you coming and are porbably preparing to eye you up and then ask how much for a short back and sides.

But surely they should be more ragey once they see you come past and you don't have 32LL boobies :D

Thankfully not had an encounter like this either, but what is there to do really. Going after them etc will just make the situation worse, and if they do something like that and you take it to the next level, they are more than likely to take it even further. And who knows where that might lead. Some people

Never ceases to amaze me how many blokes try racing a bike, but it’s still quite enjoyable knowing I’ll be topping 100 in first, when they’ve probably just snicked into 4th or 5th :D

Ever thought that they are just having a bit of fun and are well aware most motorbikes will be much quicker in a straight line? If I 'race' a motorbike it's just for a quick giggle and to hear the exhaust as it screams off, i'm not actually expecting to keep up too well.

Also my car does over 120 in 3rd. ;)

EDIT: On topic - i've done the 'double overtake' thing a few times but only if i'm confident I can overtake easily even if they are flooring it. I wouldn't try it on anything with a decent engine just incase...

Yes, it amuses me when people think that you'll only have a blast if you think you can win. I'm game with just about anything just for a laugh and curiosity.

Out of curiosity, what do you drive that will do over 120 in third gear?

Sometimes I'll "double overtake", other times I won't. Depends entirely on my speed, the capability of the other car, the attitude of the other driver and how much room there is. For example, if I am overtaking and rapidly gaining on the other person overtaking, and they are in a Fiesta or something and I can see there's no oncoming traffic, then I'll probably carry it through the whole way.

Generally the conditions aren't right for it, but sometimes they are.

In terms blocking people and all that trash, I don't partake in it unless it's part of the game. If someone wants to overtake me at 150 in a 50, they are very welcome!

according to the law you were both wrong, he shouldn't have accelerated while being overtaken and you should not have directly followed another overtaking vehicle. A policeman would have been justified (not saying I agree with it) in citing you both for dangerous driving

I would wait for the guy to pull in first and then go. I have overtaken a car already overtaking after a roundabout as the 3 lanes merge back into 2 (i.e. 2 on our side, one on the other). That was fun, but I wouldnt make a habit of it.

Heh, this reminds me of a "third lane" incident on a dual carriageway.

Cars on inside lane, I come down the outside lane much faster than them, and all of a sudden a car pulls out in front of me, forcing me to either a. brake as hard as possible and hope I don't hit them too hard, or take "evasive action". This was before the armco was installed, I decided*(Not much deciding to do in a split second, mind) to put my foot down and opt for the grass to make it past. The manoeuvre was completed, and I carried on my merry way, more concerned with how cool it was than the idiot who just cut me up :D

Wouldn't have thought so. Any number that isn't careless or dangerous given the conditions.

Essentially. I certainly hope not: my record is seven in one go. And yes, it was perfectly safe, and I had "escape" pull-ins planned and possible.

But to amplify my earlier comments, my general strategy when behind another vehicle overtaking someone is to stay behind the vehicle being overtaken (although I will usually move onto the wrong side of the road so that people behind me and the subject can both see what I plan) unless I can see far enough ahead to follow the car in front directly. I'm fully aware that my car is faster than most so I give the other driver plenty of chance to accelerate to a sensible speed. But if it looks like they want to go only a little faster, then I overtake them as well. I should emphasise that these are two separate manoeuvres, with the option to abort the second overtake right up until I start - and then only carried out when it is safe. And I assume that the second driver will try to race me (hello Jag, 2.5 Vetra and A4 estate) so the extra distance required for this is factored in. Many of the local roads have section of excellent visibility.

As for people swerving to stop me getting past, I've had three: an old Sierra, one of those silly narrow vans, and a Golf. All heaps.

How many times have you been behind someone who overtook and then slowed down? Why do people do that? I think we have the answer here!

Been having this daily this week. There's a junction in my village onto the main road where turn right only, and you can' see over the crest for traffic to the left, but there's a couple of hundred metres so it's not dangerous.

Last few days i've pulled out been accelerating at a humble pace to about 50, ofc a car pops over this ridge ploughs past me, by the time they're beside me the road is being split by hatch marking for a T junction on either side of the road, and in each case the car starts to brake before they've finished joining the lane for an upcoming shicane and single laneish bridge blob thing (if anyone know the burbage bypass south of marlborough they'll know what i mean).

From your explanation I've almost no idea what all this is. Care to link to Google Streetview? :p

I used to do it occasionally when I lived in North Yorkshire. I've only ever had one person try and accelerate off; a woman in a people carrier, her and her son thought it was very funny. I still got past with no drama though.

Done it a few times, the most memorable one being when a 3.0TDi A4 Avant pulled out to overtake two cars, so I followed (massive long stretch of road so lots of visibility) but annoyingly he wouldn't move back in - little puffs of black smoke coming out of the tailpipe, really going for it, so I ended up staying on the wrong side of the road for a lot longer. However when he did finally move he dropped the window a touch, so I'm guessing he was attempting to "play". Either way he got a face load of bang and flame :D

It's an Octavia RS.

I just checked and i'm talking out of my behind - it does 110 on the limiter (around 7200rpm). Gay, I was sure it was 120 when we tried it a while back...
