Dr Michael Mosley goes missing during hike on Greek island

Supposedly the temperature in the hills where Mosley collapsed/became unwell was around 47C according to the Guardian (10C higher than at sea level). You don't need anything wrong with you to get into huge trouble in those exceptional conditions.

Yes, so to me this increasingly seems to be a tragic "died young" scenario, as without an unfortunate sequence of events he would presumably still be alive and well. If he hadn't taken the long route or if someone had spotted him looking distressed and provided assistance, he might be back on our TVs soon.

This guy seemed pretty arrogant and a know it all on his tv shows. I guess that extended to thinking it’s a good idea to go hiking or what not in Greece during summer when you are in your 60s
Seemed to leave his common sense behind.

20 y ears ago they would have chalked this up as a Darwin award.

honestly don;t get why it had so much news coverage either its just a doctor off the tv.

how many people even heard of him before this? people barely watch TV anymore. yet the stories everywhere constantly

The old russian man who got murdered by 2 young women who he refused to lay with, barely gets a mention anywhere, even though it's far more interesting a story and almost guaranteed clicks

I'm more concerned that he was next to a bar and wasn't found. How useless are these search parties recently?
some student age woman went missing in my local park after attending a festival
No search for 24 hours, no one looked in the park at all it seems.
The police started searching the lake with a sub marine drone thing the next day.
before anyone had even looked in any of the bushes.

they had a detour up to keep people out of the polices way on one corner of the small duck lake.

I was walking past it a few hours later, the detour area was now cordoned off.

they didn't even check the detour area for bodies..... then literally must have found her about 5-10ft away from that small path they had been sending people along.
they kept it cordoned off for 2 days with a copper guarding the site the whole time. which makes me think it wasn't an accident.
It was never announced what happened to her...

I know the police don't usually do anything for 24 hours, but would it have been too much to ask for a couple of coppers to walk around the park checking all the bushes?
No police do beat patrols these days though do they, so I guess there's no one to ask...

If you stop for a second and check his age, 67, he would and did have appeal to people 50s+ , most of whom will still predominately consume media via TV.
And that same age group are broadly not into "clicks".

Similarly if some much younger presenter who mostly presented via youube/tiktok/insta passed away in similar circumstances, it would not be as notibly newsworth on "TV", but would be all over social media etc.

Are you in the 'I've had enough of experts' crew?
No lol, I just got the impression he was a little arrogant from his shows. It’s still tragic news anyway. I’m not sure exactly how long the walk was meant to be, but having lived in the Middle East in the summer where the temps can hit 50C with a dry heat you really don’t want to mess with it, that was my experience in my 20s and not being close to 70. I guess the rocks were probably quite hot aswell.

I think sadly he just made a bad decision, and it resulted in him losing his life. Who has never made a bad decision, and got away with it and afterwards thoughts, blimey that was pretty stupid.

Actually made 2 bad decisions, I think it was a REALLY bad decision not to carry his phone, maybe no signal out there, but still strange.

Yeah, there seems to be some unwise choices on the surface of it but we may never know why. I don't understand if he was feeling unwell why undertake a long walk in the brutal heat of the afternoon sun (even with an umbrella), plus as you mention without your phone?

We usually visit one of the Greek islands every year and I often leave my missus to go off on a trek but I always tell her exactly where I will be going and have the "share live location" activated on WhatsApp so she can see where I am.

When on holiday a lot of the places are new which can mean that you never know how easy/dangerous the locations can be so there is often an element of risk in places that are unfamiliar. There are some places I've made it back from that I would think twice about going again due to the risks encountered like sheer 20m drops into the sea about a meter away from the trail.

The press don't seem to have revealed how appropriately the paths were labelled to understand likelihood of error,
but yes have had a number of bushwhacking experiences under failing light, and even with a mobile phone although you might be able to call,
navigation apps that might warn you of inappropriate routes(sheer drops, gullies) not sure they exist.

...
TV broadcasts - thought his reality tv stuff was for Genz a la Dr christian , love island, property shows .. yada yada.
personally had just listened to some of his audio podcasts - just one thing - which were also often amusingly satirized by other bbc programs (becoming a drug mule to see the world comes to mind)

He made several, rather baffling bad decisions. He apparently had water but I see nothing in the photos of the day or in the CCTV that he had nearly enough considering the heat. He was badly dressed with terrible shoes for such terrain. He was 67 and decided to walk in such dangerous heat. He decided to walk an extraordinarily dangerous path where he could have easily twisted an ankle. He took wrong turns almost at every turn. No phone.

It's difficult to put together why someone who seemingly is intelligent enough to be a Dr of all things, lost all common sense and forgot the limits of his own physicality. I'm 20 years younger and would have laughed in your face if you asked me to walk that path on a normal day, let alone in a heatwave like that.

We did a 4x4 thing in Rhodes a few years ago and we got into the middle of the island and stopped for a break to try some local spirits. The guide was wondering why everyone was standing in the middle of the baking sun at 40+ degrees because pasty faced tourists are trying to top up their tan. Learnt my lesson there and then. I guess when you live in a mild climate you disregard the dangers of heat.
