Dr Michael Mosley goes missing during hike on Greek island

He made several, rather baffling bad decisions. He apparently had water but I see nothing in the photos of the day or in the CCTV that he had nearly enough considering the heat. He was badly dressed with terrible shoes for such terrain. He was 67 and decided to walk in such dangerous heat. He decided to walk an extraordinarily dangerous path where he could have easily twisted an ankle. He took wrong turns almost at every turn. No phone.

It's difficult to put together why someone who seemingly is intelligent enough to be a Dr of all things, lost all common sense and forgot the limits of his own physicality. I'm 20 years younger and would have laughed in your face if you asked me to walk that path on a normal day, let alone in a heatwave like that.

Isn’t bad decision making a common characteristic of people on holiday? Out of your normal environment you get careless because there’s a holiday euphoria, and when making judgements and assessing risk, your usual criteria don’t apply

Maybe I'm just built differently. I don't take stupid risks that I wouldn't do at home

The baffling decision was the wrong path - the water/clothing/footwear could have been fine otherwise.
People make mistakes, it happens he only arrived on the lsland a day before he was unfamiliar with the surroundings never mind the paths and forgot to bring his phone. Come on we've all done it albeit not in 40c+ heat. An error with tragic consequences

It's quite possible as an older chap that he wasn't totally wedded to his mobile, and being on holiday thought screw it, I'm going for a walk.
Is there even any signal on the path?

No lol, I just got the impression he was a little arrogant from his shows. It’s still tragic news anyway. I’m not sure exactly how long the walk was meant to be, but having lived in the Middle East in the summer where the temps can hit 50C with a dry heat you really don’t want to mess with it, that was my experience in my 20s and not being close to 70. I guess the rocks were probably quite hot aswell.

All doctors are trained at Medical School to seem very sure of themselves, that can come across as arrogance. It's a way to reassure and comfort the patient. They wouldn't feel reassured by a nervous or uncertain doctor!

I agree that going for a long walk during the hottest part of the day in an area with temperatures of 47C with just an umbrella and no water or phone was madness. Especially when you are 67-years-old and on the maximum statins dose. Apparently, he was feeling ill at the beach before he went for the walk and he left his phone there. Maybe he developed heat stroke there and that impaired his judgement which is why he wandered off for a walk.

Personally, I would avoid going to any place where it gets that hot even for a work trip, let alone for a holiday. I had to visit Jordan in 2004 for work and that only got up to 37C which was bad enough. 47C sounds more like torture than fun.

The walk itself is bizarre. I wouldn’t even consider it in that heat and I’d consider myself pretty fit. I can kind of imagine leaving my phone behind if I was just going for a short stroll. Maybe he became lost/confused quickly. Maybe he already was before the walk. Nothing else makes sense to me.

Nor I. When we had that 40c heatwave in 2022 I hardly left the house at all. I wonder if we will ever know the true circumstances.

The fact he's was a medical doctor just makes it all the more baffling, they're usually on point all the time with this sort of thing. I know a couple and they never miss a beat on anything.

I made the same mistake he did, went for a long walk on a sand dune with a bottle of water, thought id be ok if I drink enough, but I got heat stroke and collapsed, managed to crawl to the car, blasting the air con..

But I'm not a Doctor, he should have knew better and I should have took more water and poured it over myself and not drank a drop.

That was most probably heat exhaustion rather than heatstroke. If you get to the point of collapse with heat stroke, chances are you ain’t crawling anywhere

I don't get what the problem is if you have water and the humidity is not extreme.

High humidity is a nightmare though, completely wet, cant cool down, throwing up all the time.

That being said, i would have been mid-20's in those conditions not 60+

If it was 47c, it would have been impossible to cool down if he was just drinking water or had run out, best thing you can do is soak a towel and place it on your head.

You're right but If the car wasn't there and I couldn't find shade it would have got to heatstroke pretty quick.

RIP but I hope this incident raises some awareness because this kind of thing happens every summer. This time it was just someone popular.

He probably left his phone as reception could have been rubbish.
doesnt stop the GPS working, or google navigation as long as you start the navigation whilst you have internet

Seems like nothing but arrogance killed the guy, any non famous TV doctor would have taken precuations or avoided the heat.

but he knew better

suprised someone so wealthy didn;t have an apple watch that notifies someone when your in trouble

He qualified 20 years ago and practiced very briefly (not even a year) before going into media.

Practicing Doctors aren't sensible most of the time either though.
