Dragon Age: The Veilguard

It's the biggest platform and so gives the best indicator of sales numbers against other games, take your tin foil hat off, what next is Steam just a far right bigoted platform now ?

Steam is not the biggest platform, take your PC blinkers off because consoles still account for more sales than PC let alone just Steam. Or are you claiming steam sales are also indicative of console game sales?

My point is you need to take both PC (all sources not just Steam) and console sales into account.

As long as they make enough sales across all platforms the mainstream game companies will keep churning out mediocrity. They won’t care because gamers and even the media will move on in a week or so.

Whatever else this game is or isn't. It is seemingly not in step with previous DA titles and as a standalone RPG it's pretty average. Numbers do not lie; so it's either a success or not. I'm sure that outcome will shake out in time.

And pretty much every other game it's been compared to is released on PS5 and Xbox too, Black myth: Wukong with its million currents on steam or whatever it got ALSO sold on the PS5.

The relative numbers are a legit indicator of sales, unless you believe that this game's steam numbers are manipulated in some way or there's something different about the steam user base, are they all Nazis ?

Black Myth is an outlier due to the cultural significance to China and having Chinese developers, I doubt China was excited about any Dragon Age game. Cherry picking at it's best/worst.

Hopefully we get some proper metrics as opposed to speculation and figures being pulled out of people's backside.

Problem is the goalposts just move again, lets pretend (far fetched example) it is the biggest selling game of all time, you'll then get people saying "oh well, Justin Bieber sold millions of records, does that mean you think he's good" It is a never ending circle of playground level exchanges. Ultimately, people will believe what they want to, there is always a 'yeah but' to every fact etc.

OK how about palworld or cyberpunk or the 100 other games you could name, have you got a reason why each of those don't count ?

The point is the steam numbers aren't pulled out of someone's backside, they one of the few that are real and comparable and come without any spin.

I concede I'll be in the minority and not for the first time. Humanity is fickle and to be fair I'm getting older, the demographic changes. I can't re-live being a teenager in the 80s, no matter how much I wish it.

Yes, they aren't Dragon Age games, totally different audiences, if anything the game should be compared to previous Dragon Age games, or the straw grasping can continue.

Oh! Well the goods news is the game is over 20,000 more popular than when Neil posted earlier so it must be doing well!

Sad but true. I used to love long drawn out games, now I tend to stick to ones I can just dip in and out of or finish in 15h<.

Ahh, OK so it's the number one best game ever called dragon's age that was released in 2024, it's a sure fire moneymaker !!!

It's currently two places below BG3 and two places above stardew valley. Of course, BG3 is a completely different game, so I'm being unfair.

Do you know how much money it has made then, please share with the rest of us :)

Just comparing it to dragon age games is a bit of a pointless metric

Games in the same genre though absolutely

I'm put off by the art style somewhat, the "wokeness" is neither here nor there for me but there's absolutely a divisiveness with what's been included here.

I'll get it when it's cheaper and I'll enjoy it as I don't really buy games launch day

Looking at concurrent users though right now, it seems absolutely fine. It's amongst the top games let alone top single player games

RPG is a very broad genre though, Ocarina of Time is an RPG, so is Final Fantasy, Witcher 3, and dragons Dogma, none of those games are alike really (unless swords count as being similar). Ultimately, the comparisons will be made to suit a particular POV or bias. I've lost track of the goalposts now after review scores didn't work out but I guess the only way we would know how it has performed commercially is from an official source.
Then people can speculate (but state as fact) the reasons why it did or didn't perform/sell etc.

Regardless, 'Banana' has more current players than any other single player game on steam right now so they are all a flop compared to Banana.

My point is not about the game, or how much it sells compared to other games. Just that it needs to sell enough across all platforms for it to be considered a financial success by the corporate suits. They don’t care if people think a game is GOAT or dross, as long as people bought it.

But to be fair, there's going to be a lot lot more people playing on other platforms,

No, neither do you, but I'd probably make a closer guess using the data we do have than you dismissing it. Maybe 5 million people bought it to play at Christmas, it's possible.

I don't think Witcher 3 is a million miles away comparison wise

It's not about comparing the games as the same but the target audience, and I bet my arse Witcher 3 and Dragon Age have the same target audience

Can you explain why 5 million is a relevant number? Have you accounted for physical sales on all platforms too?

Actually a valid point re xmas, we won't know for months if the game makes a profit or not.

BioWare confirms there is no dlc for the game; any plans for dlc were cancelled

Got to give it to BioWare, at least the execs could see the writing on the wall - they knew the game wasn't going to be a big success and decided it would be better to avoid wasting time on dlc that no one will play

BioWare goes on to say this game is now in their rear view mirror and they are only working on mass effect and no development resources are working on DA:V anymore
