Dragon Age: The Veilguard

Also, interesting video on SkillUps YT for his FPS podcast - you've got Ralph (who lays into it again) discussing it with Paul Tassi who "very much enjoyed it" along with Lucy who is "Mixed" so it's an interesting chat. You can definately see then trying remain civil and hold back when in a real conversation with a bunch of mates you'd probably be calling each other morons at that point :D

Interesting part of the conversation when they talk about writing and characterisation and whether Veilguard has the equivalent of an Astarion in BG3, or Garrus in MassEffect....somoene who the fandom really resonates and attaches to; but I can't see this for DA. The fandom for this game seems incredibly narrow at this point, so I don't see it having the traction, but it's stuff like this that really keeps a games momentum.

I listened to this earlier whilst cleaning, it was interesting for sure

I am still laughing at the fact that Kingdom Come Deliverance, game that was partially funded by kickstarter and which had around 20 million USD total budget, new IP from new studio, and non-fantasy (and thus completely unproven since there is no other RPG like that) managed 96K CCU on Steam at a time when the amount of Steam users was TWICE LOWER than today (18 million CCU peak compared to today's 38 million), while new big budget fantasy blockbuster from legendary franchise and legendary developer Bioware managed..84K.

If anyone still thinks this number is good, they are delusional. This game is not making a profit for EA.

Look at BG3, Larian had a track record of making good RPGs, but what really sold it is the "bear sex" scene that got them banned on tiktok. That game hit 900,000 ccu and its a very niche turn based crpg. A genre the big players in the industry had completely forgotten about.

I think what also stands out is the fantasy/medieval turn based JRPG called Metaphor: ReFantazio having higher peak players, it launched about a month prior. It's in a similar although not exact vein as DA:V, but it's also a totally new IP from a relatively niche studio/genre by comparison to the giant that is supposed to be EA-Bioware.

It's actually a good game too if you're into that sort of thing, I don't think anyone can genuinely say the same about Veilgaurd, 8-9/10 scores are laughable and clearly showcase how useless legacy media has become.

Not just the bear scene, but also kicking the squirrel

This is making me want to play BG3 again haha

kicking the squirrel sold bg3 as a game where you can be evil.
and put peoples minds at ease.

Games are just too expensive these days and too many bad games.
I think it's hard to convince gamers to buy something with so many free games around to

It's not that games are too expensive, it's more that large western studios are unfocused and too concerned about crap players couldn't care less about.

Black Myth cost under 70 million to make and sold 22 million copies, as mentioned above Metaphor cost less than DA:V but way more successful. They are good games that don't pander or preach.

I can see you all had a fun Saturday...

Claiming the writing sucks in Veilguard and then comparing it to Black Myth: Wukong is funny though. As much as I loved that game (completed it twice through) the story was absolute bobbins to my western ears.

Anyway, I'm about 12 hours in to Veilguard and very much enjoying it. Gameplay wise it has more in common with Mass Affect 3 and God of war than the one Dragon Age game I played before.

I really cant remember much about the original dragon age but l'm pretty sure Elves were looked down on by other races. No sign of that here so far but I don't know if there were later game story reasons for why they might be looked on more favourably or they just forgot to dipict it. Mainly been doing companion type quests so far to build the bond level with them. 'Neve' and 'Lucanis' are the most interesting so far.

They removed pretty much anything negative from the lore incase someone gets offended. There are no "evil" options or difficult dilemmas either.

Dialog options also all lead to the same outcome. Very poorly written and shallow compared to the original.

This is my take as well, there are plenty of games lauded for greatness with equally terrible writing. Elden Ring has almost zero story and is a confusing mess of lore. Wukong is just terrible as a story and so cringe. Skyrim, is just the usual trite hackneyed RPG “there be dragons” plot.

I mentioned earlier it remind me of God of War in how it plays and the story telling/dialogue reminds me of Diablo III or IV and even the early ME games.

A lot of the hate seems to be the typical edge lord YouTubers not liking the idea of the underlying morality (aka wokeness). Or as I prefer to call it “tolerance”.

It’s no 9/10 or even 8/10 but 6-7 out of 10. Could have been so much better, but I think they will certainly make enough profit over all the platforms and subscriptions on EA.

Edit: As far as financial success goes, I suspect it will sell enough to make a profit… but it will be considered a flop by the corporate suits. The same thing happened with Dead Space, it sold well enough but nowhere near projections and the IP was canned.

Next to the previous games it's a 4/10 tbh.

Except for the mediocre peak it had a day ago, BG3 has consistently more players even a year after release. People are voting with their wallets and it's not for Veilguard.

DA2 is worse in my opinion and it's so much better than Mass Effect Andromeda; now that game was truly cringeworthy.

Do we know how many are playing via EA Play Pro (like me)? Only true DA enthusiasts would be buying it for full price on Steam.
