Driving

I've been driving 4-5 years and I'm so pleased I passed when I did.
Although I actually enjoyed learning at the time I would hate to go through it all again now.

Passed theory 1st and driving 2nd.

Can't walk 10 miles.

Often impractical.

As cycling, but more flexible.

A taxi for 5 miles is £10 here!

Perhaps if you are unemployed, smell of urine or are 67.

Agreed here. Often a sensible choice.

Errr yea ok.

You never cease to amaze me, are you a toff?

You are just looking for excuses, when did you last cycle to work or a friends house, in summer its great, winter not so great but its free and good for you.

Plus buses are great in terms of value, I can get the night bust home after a night out for £2 compare that to £10+ in a taxi.

One trip on the night bus compared to a taxi isn't exactly an argument for great value. Round here a couple of miles costs nearly £3 on the bus. It's absolutely obscene.

The feeling is mutual I can assure you. You don't need to be a 'toff' to find that a bus offers a poor level of service.

Buses are good value if you live in an area with a PTE/Metro type system.

Here, a return into town is £3 and requires a 1.5 mile walk to the bus stop.

Petrol in a 3 litre car is £2, parking is free.

Yea, I think I'll take the bus. Not.

I'm not a big fan of driving, being stuck in rush hour traffic every morning and evening for the past 5 years saps my will to drive.

The best bit about driving is being able to listen to music as stupidly loud as you like without giving two hoots as to who is around you. I'm sure I've been sighted singing my soul out to various music at numerous traffic lights across the country :p

Today, I was blasting music out some techno whilst chomping down on a samosa in a Sainsbury's car park. Oh yes, I live life to the max.

I was always a little bored by driving, I didn't dislike it, but I found no joy in it, learnt in a nice car, bought a crappy little banger, all very meh, then I got a new car recently, more powerful than I was used to, and because the car tells me to, I drive a bit more agressively, and as such...got done for speeding :/

so I find it depends on the car somewhat, but I don't go out for random drives because I like driving, though I know many who do just get in the car and drive around for hours

Exactly, I'm a speed freak, I do everything fast or it's boring, however in a car that will almost certainly be illegal. Instead you drive around at mundane speeds on a road clogged with other people...

My driving lessons were interesting because my instructor kept pointing out hot girls and generally swooning all over the place.

I like driving though, you don't need to drive illegally to have fun either :p

But it helps...:p

Try racing.

Then you'll really hate 'driving'.

;)

Racing I want to have a try at, however car racing has never appealed to me. Motorcycle (especially off road), bike, ski and powerboat racing on the other hand!

Driving is like cycling, walking or running. After some time it becomes just a normal thing (especially if you drive in London every day same route to work), having said that if you do have a chance of driving in different condition ie motorway over the speed limit it brings some kind of excitement.

Exactly, just a mundane task, like spelling, it's not interesting but you need to do it (most of the time).

I can't imagine not driving. Imagine having to rely on people for lifts etc.

Called pedal/feet power and public transport (and I don't mean busses). I have to say I love trains, especially cross country ones. If you're cycling to somewhere you can have fun along the way, cycle fast down some twisty singletrack, jump down some stairs or off walls etc. I'd like to see you do that in a car.:p

Trains on the other hand, you can just lie back and relax in a comfy relaxed atmosphere while getting there in less or the same time it takes to drive (usually). Or you can drive along clogged roads for 4 hours and be knackered by the time you get there.

Imagine having to regularly use public transport. Ugh.

Nothing wrong with public transport (although I exclude buses in that comment).

that's 'have to' (sp) :p

:o Poor mistake!

Their is at least 7 more ways of transport than driving.

Walking
Cycling
Motorbike
Taxi
Bus
Train
Helicopter
Plane
Boat

Exactly.

If he doesn't want to learn how to drive a car, you think he wants to learn how to ride a motorbike, fly a plane or helicopter, or sail a boat? :p

Actually I do want to learn to ride a motorcycle (in fact I already can off road), I also have powerboating certificates and was going to get a teaching certificate as well. As for flying, I always wanted to do that too, and when I have the money it's something i'm going to do. :)

I guess the problem is the transport I am already able to use is far more exciting than driving slowly along a flat road. There's nothing more exciting than taking a 5m RIB out into a 5m+ swell and spending half your time airborne (legally), or cycling on some really rough and twisty stuff, or skiing down some narly as hell mountain.:p

I know how to drive but never did my test.

Driving bored the living hell out of me and makes me angry, hence why I am now leaning to ride a Motorbike (taking my test in about a month).

This is fine, so long as the music is not audible outside the car. If the music is audible outside the car, then it should be destroyed by RPG fire, and the law should permit this.

This...I had a pervy instructor too. :D

I love driving and can quite happily have loads of fun driving within the law. :)

Wanting to start but £20 - £25 a lesson makes me cry. Saving up for a semi intensive one where its 6 weeks 2 times a week for 2 hours each.

For the safety of the rest of us, please stop learning to drive and take the bus for the rest of your life.

:p (yes I realise youy probably aren't joking). As I said illegal, so i'm not likely to do it, which is why it's boring (not that that stops the majority of people on the road, it would be interesting to know the percentage of people that speed on a regular basis, probably the vast proportion of drivers!)...

I want to get a motorcycle licence, unfortunately the type of job I want will probably involve needing to drive a 4x4 around a lot. That added to the fact I can't afford a bike and insurance (using my parents car and will be for a while) means the bike licence has to take a back seat.:(

Mine just pointed them out and told me to get my foot down and to not be a pansy about my speed. :p :D Which resulted in me scaring him when I went through a very narrow bridge at ~30mph (60limit road)...when I should really have done ~10mph. :p

Worst part was I had my lessons from college most days, so he'd pick me up from there...which is fine apart from the college I went to was a school for years 7-11 (in uniform) and then college for 12+13 (none uniform)...he'd perv at the kids in uniform. :(

I'll use trains quite a bit, especially for trips to London. But sometimes it just doesn't work. My door to my girlfriends door is either:

1.5 mile walk
4 mile bus ride
5 hour train journey with a change in Newport Wales (!?)
5 mile bus ride

Alternatively I can get into my 5 Series, set the climate control to my desired temperature, select my favourite playlist on my ipod and set off. 2 and a half hours later I'm there.

Or you can drive along clogged roads for 4 hours and be knackered by the time you get there.

You just need the right car. I am never 'knackered' after a long journey.

I guess i'm quite lucky in that I drive with my parents, which means hopefully I should need at max 10 lessons (my sisters only had around that amount) and so only around £200.

Well, I'm not a windows down blasting music kind of fellow if that's what you mean. Regardless, my car is RPG proof.

And to go the right routes.

I drove Cornwall - York and back in a 306 diesel and wasn't knackered, set the seat position etc. up correctly and Iw as fine. :)
