Dune (2020) - Denis Villeneuve

A lot of films these days are bloated and are self indulgent. The Hobbit for example.

Getting a film these days with a tight script with very little wasted screen time is rare.

Yeah well thats obviously as they wanted to try and squeeze as much cash out of it despite the fact that theres only just about enough material for one film never mind three. I don't mind the movies theres a lot to the enjoy but theres far too much filler someone really ought to make a director's cut that sliced them up into a single movie then it might be worth a single sitting.

The Hobbit was a short-ish children’s story that Jackson stretched out into 3 films, making some of it up along the way and trying to cram in stuff from the LotR appendices.

Dune is a fat novel and Lynch’s film is an example of how there’s too much to squeeze into one film unless you only care about hitting the main plot points, which aren’t the meat and potatoes of what makes Dune so good. A couple of 2.5-3hr films should be sufficient, however.

Dune Messiah and Children of Dune are much shorter novels that wouldn’t need to be split into 2 films each.

Hobbit might have been a bad example:p Quentin and Synder have a habbit of over runing even though I love most of their work. I was just pointing out the art of a tight script and not wasting a scene is becoming a lost art.

Now if the rumours are true about the test screenings getting praised I'd happily sit through multiple films that are 3 hours long

I don't think I've ever been this excited about a film, probably got something to do with Dune being my favourite book. I'm trying not to set high expectations but everything I've seen or read eats away at my resistance!

I've always had a soft spot for the original, I know its not a great film but it gave flesh to many of the characters which lets me visualise the story more vividly when I read the book.

Must. Not. Watch. Trailer.

Although my hype is at stupid levels and it might settle expectation.

I mean, it's not going to spoil the story (unless you've been living under a rock) :P

I endured the rest of the books a while back, having only read the first previously. They're not great, to put it politely. I'm excited for the first one as it's a great story in it's own right....not really bothered if they make any more.

Gutted Ian M Banks TV adaptation got binned :(

Oh for sure, I finally read the book last year as well, with Lynch's adapation, the mini series, the games, the recent comics, the story is going to have little, if any surprises.

It's more the aesthetic and presentation of it, I don't want to be overly familiar by the time i've seen it at the cinema. I want a little mystery left to see how one of my favourite directors will portray something that's already got an assortment of adaptions,

I think I've already said it somewhere... But!

I'm totally ok for them to "Sex up the Action" and fighting parts, if it honestly looks awesome the first book is more of an introduction to the universe, themes and characters anyway really.....

I hope it gets its 2nd part, that would be criminal if it doesn't.

The film still has to be aimed pretty low for non fans and not be full of expo dumps like lynch's, although i really didn't mind that, its one of my favourite films for style.

I also love the Miniseries and really dig the costumes in that, even though it feels like a community collage did them some times, its cool! everyone has their look and their style.

I'm probably just gonna spend the first viewing with tears in my eyes anyway, in all honesty... I hope he has drawn from all iterations(not sure that's the right word, my English is getting worse and worse :P) of the books, film and series but has still taken his own spin, which certainly seems to be true.

No more trailers for me.

Any news on digital availability? Or are they going for a full cinema only release? Not sure I really fancy it tbh, would rather watch at home.
