Dune (2020) - Denis Villeneuve

The early reports and production information did state it was all being done at the same time, they've changed tact along the way somewhere and not really made anyone aware.

I do worry due to the day 1 release on HBOMAX too that a lot of folks will simply pirate, killing a lot of revenue and making a sequel DOA :(
So how do you legally watch it in the UK?

Denis recently said something like watching Dune via streaming is like riding a speedboat in a bathtub.

Having seen BR2409 on a huge screen and then on Netflix the sense of scale and ooomf is just massively different with the latter. This film is even bigger. You will be missing out a huge part of the experience watching it at home unless you’re blessed with an amazing home theatre set-up.

I think watching BR2049 at the cinema distracted me from my pre-conceived Gosling hate :D I was just immersed by the movie from the moment it started.

I've since watched it twice more on home setups and as you say, it just doesn't convey the same feel at all.

BR2049 is the only film I’ve went to see twice at the cinema. Absolutely immense on a massive screen and decent sound system. A 40 foot Ana in all her glory as well

Dune looks like it will be epic as well - I expect it to bomb though as the story is a tough sell the average member of public.

I had some friends over a few weeks back who quite like sci fi and showed them the trailer, one was put off as soon as he saw Bautista and the other when he saw Momoa. While the ensemble cast is very high quality, a few actors folks don't like can really put people off the entire movie :(

Shame Bautista is great in BR2049. Momoa though has never really grabbed me i anything he’s been in.

Having seen Sicario and BR2049 I was blown away by the cinematography in both films. Villeneuve is possibly the best person to tackle a film like this at the moment.

I like Bautista in most he's done, he takes it all quite seriously.

Sicario is probably one of my favourite movies of all time and set me on the road with DV, he's a true visionary director and unlike Nolan, can actually convey decent emotion in his movies as well as spectacle.

That'll be Roger Deakins.

Deakins is often cited as one of the greatest and most influential cinematographers of all time.[43][44][45] His consistent output led fellow cinematographer Robert Elswit to jokingly suggest that the American Society of Cinematographers should establish a special award for "films shot by Roger Deakins."[4] Deakins did achieve a degree of notoriety, however, for his lack of success at the Academy Awards, where he received 13 nominations without a win, a fact often lamented by journalists and film critics.[46][47][48] His first Oscar win (on his 14th nomination) for Blade Runner 2049[49] at the 90th Academy Awards was widely reported and met with great enthusiasm.[23]

Deakins is considered to be among the most respected and sought-after cinematographers in the film business. His involvement in a film could secure the casting of established stars—a distinction usually reserved for auteur directors.[3] He landed the role of director of photography in The Shawshank Redemption at the insistence of Tim Robbins, who had previously worked with him on the Coen brothers film The Hudsucker Proxy.[50] Josh Brolin agreed to join the cast of Sicario only after hearing of Deakins's involvement.[3] When Ryan Gosling accepted his role in Blade Runner 2049, he cited the involvement of Deakins as a factor for his decision.[51]

RD and DV are one hell of a dream team. Shame RD didn't shoot Dune but Greig Fraser is pretty good himself.

Us old farts forget that little Timothy has a rabid young fanbase that’ll go see anything he’s in, and Zendaya is pretty popular herself. Probably deliberate Denis came out and said she’d have a much bigger part to play in part 2 since she’s likely in this film a lot less than the trailers would imply.

I think it’ll do ok!

Agreed, I think he is pretty good for the type of rolls he gets, he is very good at timing if that makes any sense. Was good Bond Henchmen as well always hard to do well.

The new take on the guild Heighliner. It looks more like ab ridge between 2 points. Artificial black hole kinda thing.... Rather than a vessel you fill up then transport?

I get Goosebumps every time i click this thread

According to people who saw the IMAX footage it's just a moon of Caladan in the background in the trailer - visible because the Heighliner is like a 20km hollowed out cylinder. As per the books, it's still very big interstellar ferry with most having routes/schedules across the Empire, hence IIRC the shock at the start of the book they'd send a Heighliner with just a single ship on board to deliver the emperor's message (due to the cost).
