Dune (2020) - Denis Villeneuve

**** I actually get goose bumps looking at that Atreides line up......

Im onboard with the style. Is it a Dark navy blue or green, i cant make it out......
Bit Samurai Kendo inspired? Armour.... Interesting....

I wonder what they will do with Corrrino and Sardauka, very impressed.

I really liked the miniseries take on them, very Papal.

Loved the Dune 2 game

Never read the books. With movie coming out I probably shouldn't, as they will probably butcher the plot.
I would be fine with that if units and buildings from the game were included.

Villeneuve's monochromatic style really works imo, really gets across the dryness.

Really glad it's in two parts, even the Lynch length version couldn't comfortably fit the story in.

The miniseries tried bless it, but I couldn't get past the obviously cardboard sets.

It looks great, I think the casting looks pretty good too. Isaac as the Duke seems to be carrying that nobility thing that Procknow brough to the role. Brolin is a different Gurney to the book or Lynch film but I can see that working. I think Chamelet is a good pick and Zendaya and Bardem have that desert look going on for Fremen. Not sure about Momoa neither picture does him justice so it's difficult to tell but Duncan is not a big character in the first book anyway. Changing Keynes for a woman is no issue for me, I don't know the actress but she maybe looks a little young. I liked the aged World-weary Von Sydow representation, so maybe that's biased me.

I'm loving the look, really good cast only one thing in that Vanity Fair interview worried me.

Dennis was very respectful of Frank's work in the book, but the quality of the arcs for much of the women have been brought up to a new level. There were some shifts he did, and they are beautifully portrayed now

Now Jessica has the second largest arc in the book, only Paul has more. Admitted Chani is not a major character but neither arc Duncan, Gurney or the Duke. I hope they're not going to screw the pooch by increasing the sizes of parts that aren't supposed to be large for diversity reasons. In this regard Lynch's version was great.

I also hope Zendaya is better in this than she is in Spiderman because she was frankly wooden in both those films.

edit: name mangling typo

Both young Timmy and Zendaya both have a huge young fan-base (who seem to have picked up that Chani is Paul's love interest and are going into meltdown), which should hopefully get them off their sofas to watch the film and help make it more of a commercial success than BR.

One thing I didn't know: I was bummed Denis wouldn't be working with Deakins again for this project, but they've actually got the guy from Rogue One, which had some excellent cinematography, which this film demands in spades because of the sheer scale, grandeur and slight alien-ness of the setting and civilisation. One of the hardest things about Dune to get right IMO, is that feeling of being 20,000+ years in the future, not a few hundred or a couple of thousands, which isn't an easy thing to accomplish.

I'm probably in the minority but much preferred the first Dune game (the point and click adventure/strategy cross over) - just seeing the character names in the article above brings back memories.

I've not read the book either, but secretly looking forward to this

Yep, the first game was a strange mishmash of genres, but it worked great. I played it over and over again. Way ahead of it's time really, a proper open-world RPG, with RTS/resource management thrown, roaming around the planet on the back of your sandworm :D Criminally overlooked game imo!

Production shots are looking great. The cast is brilliant and if it all pulls together this could be one of the best sci-fi films for a long time. The cast will also pull in the audiences it deserves.

Dune was still quite a niche film / book so lots won't know the plot.

The first Dune game was amazing and hugely popular at the time (1992/93), it was an established genre though.

Dune II was easily the genre defining base building/war machine RTS game; with a fantastic lore, plot and universe. Westwood Studios subsequent Command and Conquer series went rather well too.
