Dungeons and Dragons: Honor Among Thieves

Been avoiding reviews it but doubt I get round to watch it in the cinema but catch it in home release.

Press for this was a disaster.

Vox has set a high bar.

8/10 was scared it would be awful but ..

I thought it was completely fine and decent I had a few good laughs too.
Hugh Grant was great as was Chris Pine's one liner comebacks.
one of the parties of adventures in the maze arena was actually the characters from the 80s DND cartoon posted above
I just saw JW4 too and tbh i thought this was a much better overall film.
Yeah I liked it, wholesome family message too which has been oddly missing from a lot of films for a while...

Exactly thats what i thought too, i liked JW4 but i enjoyed this a bit more for some reason. I watched it twice :D.

Yeah i didnt want to mention that reference but there so many nods to all the past DnD (wizard of the coast) books, lore, tv shows and games etc.

I think that the bad press was a combo of a silly comment from the writers "we emasculated the men" and a lack of understanding by the general press of DND and its fan base.

The writers, I think, tried to come across as cool, progressive hollyweird types with that comment but, again, they didn't seem to understand the DND fanbase where "gender" means virtually nothing in-game so people often play characters of different genders, species, sexualities etc and that escapism is one of its biggest selling points, so the idea that the writers thought that the "men should be emasculated" only showed how silly they were. The same is true of the press who don't really understand just how "big" DND really is as, to look at some reports, they still think its that nerdy thing played in mom's basement by kids, rather than being a billion dollar franchise.

The people who goofed worst however were those non-DND fans who reacted negatively to the "males are emasculated" story. They were never likely to watch in the first place and so their comments/anger, fueled by a lack of understanding of how silly the writers comment was, went nowhere.

I'm off to see it this week, I like Pine and Rodriguez and I'm more interested in how many bits of DND I spot than ripping what will probably be a fairly generic 5-6/10 film to bits.

Thought it was brilliant. 9/10 for me.
I play DnD a lot.

It was silly. It stuck mostly to the core rules. Apart from the unlimited shape change! And transforming into an owlbear. But it's fine. An owlbear is so dnd. "I'll allow it!" in the words of a DM!

I was a tad disappointed that the villains didn't get more of a back story/explanation of motives etc.

But the building of the team, the mission, the one liners, the running jokes. It was a bit cringy as it should be, it was silly, as it should be, things went wrong a lot, as they should.

It was very predictable. But didn't detract from the enjoyment

Cast were great. Maybe the druid less so. But maybe personal preference there.

Yeah read that too, quite shocked considering i found it really enjoyable.
Is it though? I mean the name alone is still dripping in nerdom 'dungeons and dragons'. You aren't going to pull in the casual viewer with that sort of association and Chris Pine isn't that big of a draw for the ladies like say Cavill is. There's also the recent WotC drama that could have resulted in folks not wanting to see it.

My sister is a good example of the struggles this film may have due solely over the name -
  • Hi Sis, I'm off to the cinema.
  • What you watching?
  • A film about a small team of people with special skills who have to come together to fight the bad guys and need to free the heroes daughter along the way
  • Sounds OK, whats it called?
  • Dungeons & Dragons : Honour among............
  • I'll stop you there.............no thanks!
Even word of mouth will struggle against the "isn't that a bit geeky" mentality that DND as a name brings out in non-fans.

I took my 9 year old to see it today after we saw the trailer a few weeks ago.

It was predictable, a bit pants and Hugh Grant was simply Hugh Grant, but you know what - I really enjoyed it and the boy loved it.

Just a quick update, Critical Drinker seemed to like it too despite the initial poor press making him pre-judge this poorly. However, he's happy to admit when he's wrong -

Have't watched his review yet as i'm trying to avoid spoiler's but that's great to know as I tend to gravitate to the same type of films he likes.

Like ACG on his game taste/Reviews

4 of us went and thought it was awful. Dull, cliché and childish would be my summation. Really couldn't stand Chris Pine in it, his character was terrible and his jokes flatter than a pancake and Michelle Rodriguez's acting/accent felt really jarring and out of place.

Family outing last night,. Really enjoyed it 8 year old loved it though she thought the mage was really scary. A sign of a good villan for 8year old.

I am massively disappointed in what they did to the dragon though, it's just not right :)

Just got back and thought Pine, Grant and Rodriguez were poor, just wooden and not great actors at all (that could also be the writers but I've not been a fan of any of them really) the story wasn't too bad and the neighbours kids (7 & 10) loved it, especially the Owlbear smashing people like Hulk did Loki in Ragnarök.

It was a 5 out of 10 but certainly better than the 2000 effort.

As a light family adventure movie we though it was good enjoyable adventure romp.

Its a 12A movies so I'm surprised at the young age of some of the kids being brought to it. Also the criticism that its not something more high brow.

its a 12A and utter make belief story... you will be saying jack and the beanstalk needs adult supervision next time its on TV about a Giant who eats people.......
