Dungeons & Dragons/Pathfinder/*

My thinking was I'll be running it episodic so it may be every Sunday for 2-3 weeks to clear an episode but then a few weeks off whilst I prepare the next if that sounds reasonable? (But we won't do the 19th)

Timing wise I'm not too sure, I need to sort bedtime so start at 730 and then 1-3 hours dependent on the flow?

I'm easy though, been an age since I have gm'ed

Sounds good to me! I just need to make sure I am in bed by 2300-2330 or I won't get up for work the next day!

Looking forward to it, I'll get my character across asap (just busy at work, and thats when I do my DnD stuff!).

Ok then we can start the 12th 1930 with an aimed finish of 2200 (go a little earlier/later so we finish at a sensible point)

IF you can email me character sheets please (if I want more info I'll chase you) then I'll add the character sheets and get going with roll20. I think the first adventure will be a ****** to set up on there but after that should be ok.

Cheers gents! Excited now! :D:p

@ Bickaxe - I used 4d6 drop lowest when I DM but its caused a few issues, had to let some guy keep re-rolling as he was getting 5's and 10's for stats when everyone else got lucky and has at least 18 in their main stat. He kept rolling as his points were around 20 below everyone elses... he then went and rolled 18,17,16,13,13,11 and I've had to let him keep it .. he is a warlock of teifling origin, so he has 20 Charisma (+5!).

All in all, everyone his hitting more often, due to higher main stats, which has meant that I have had to slightly adjust monsters to compensate.

Next time I DM I am going to point buy it, so I don't have to adjust DC checks and monster stats on the fly.

@ Lordhughes - I am fully expecting everyone to accent it up! I might even see about borrowing a shirt of chain mail to play in haha (my brother has one, dont ask).

Adjusting monster stats and dc checks based on PC stats seems like a terrible idea. The entire point in having good stats is the thing you're trying to avoid.

Either up the number of monsters they're against or put them against more difficult monsters.

Same with dc checks, either keep them the same, or make what they're trying to achieve harder (ie jumping a 15ft gap becomes a 20ft gap etc).

It'd seriously put me off playing if whatever stats I rolled (good or bad) made no difference because the DM just adjusted stats to compensate.

It is a terrible idea, I agree. But it wasn't just one person with good stats, it was all of them. The problem there is that I was running the well balanced starter set. If I started to add monsters or change them, it increased the chance that I would get it wrong and TPK them all (also a new DM, so that wouldn't have helped).

Since I was running the starter set it lists all your monsters that you are against as well as any DC checks. It was easier to give +1 AC's and a few extra HP to monsters than go through and try and balance the battles again.

It wasn't an option to simply add more monsters in as I already have 6 PCs so combat takes a long time already.

I've since asked, and its been accepted, that we re-roll stats using the standard array instead. The problem before mainly was that everyone was strong at everything... no one had any downsides to their characters so it meant that they didn't have to think about who to send in first or who should do the talking as they could all pass the DCs and stuff. Now we have 1 player who is good at stealth, 1 good at talking, 1 good at this and another at that. Means each player can get some lime light.

Last time around, when we started Hoard of the Dragon Queen, I had everyone roll 4d6, drop the lowest, and then had everyone use the best set. That way, everyone was as awesome as the next, and stats were never a major factor. Yes, they would never have had abilities that high with a point array, but I like my PCs to be proper heroes, well above the average man - but not to have such a big difference between the heroes themselves.

Besides, if I find monsters are too tough, or too weak, changing their stats on the run is as simple as just taking it easy - I can't believe there isn't a DM in the world who hasn't fudged a few rolls behind their screen :D

That said, don't think I take it easy on my group - they've had a total of five deaths so far :D

Pookie, that sharing method sounds very fair.

I've heard about everyone rolling stats, then putting them in a pool and each player takes one stat in turn until the whole pool has been exhausted, discussing amongst themselves how to share the points out for the benefit of the team, but your method sounds really cool - I may well be trying that out in a future game.

Yeah, it works a treat - everyone is equally powerful. And they tend to be above average.

We're implementing a new "hidden roll" system tonight. For the last six months, I've been using an open table policy - no DM screen and all rolls openly visible. It's been novel - and there has been lots of cursing (I seem to roll quite well when I'm attacking PCs :D). Tonight, a new low-profile screen comes back, and I've built a little dice tower for secret rolls - like checking to see if someone is lying, or they search somewhere, I don't want them rolling a 1 or a 20 and knowing they're wrong or right - I just want them to see what they see :D

My missus runs our monthly game and rolls a handful of dice of different colours. She might only be interested in the red one but when there are a dozen or so, you're not sure what she's up to. Sneaky mare.

Also helps as one of our players tries to look at her notes. She wrote a separate story (with map and enemies) for him to cheat at so his wizard ended up with the wrong spells prepared.

Oddly enough, he hasn't gained any experience for a while....

The new hidden roll system worked a treat last night more than once. I like it.

The only thing people used to really look at was my recording of hit points and when the Monster Manual was open. I draw maps on a big whiteboard as we go to help them visualise what's going on, so maps aren't usually a problem.

Sorry for the delay in sending mine over, I'm out and about atm with work and the file is on my home PC >_>

If I can't get back home in the next few days I will just re-do it.

Hi chaps, I will need to put things back by a couple of weeks until a 26th start if people can do that?

With work going mental, a stag do and a family holiday I've been home 6 nights in the past 6 weeks and just haven't had the chance to sort out roll20 to finalise.

Wasn't supposed to be going away for about a month but now away again for 2 more weeks until things should settle down. Apologies but if you can do the 26tg should be ready in time.
