E-Scooter discussion after fatal collision

I’m sorry, but a £1k bike from 5-6 years ago IS the definition of an expensive bike, sure it’s not the highest of high end, but it’s still well into high end territory.
1k was pretty much entry level for anyone who rides for more than a commute, my bike doesn't look anything special special nor is it any fancy materials apart from carbon forks.
other serious cyclists on this forum at the time were buying 2-3k+ bikes

The point I was making was that the vast majority of bikes on the roads are cheap bikes with **** poorly maintained brakes ridden by ‘inexperienced’ riders or people who don’t ride for fun e.g. it’s Doris going to the shops.
I heard the new boris ebikes are rubbish.

It won't be 7kg for that price with just carbon forks. Not a chance.

@arknor 7kg is very light. That's a £10k bike if it was 5-6 years old.
oh my bad I was wrong it's 10kg bought in 2015 but it's a 2014 bike.

no idea where I got this 7kg number from :S

https://99spokes.com/bikes/merida/2014/cyclo-cross-4
described as "A cyclocross bike with upper mid-range components and mechanical disc brakes"
so far from high end

Forks are atually carbon though, I don't know why it;s always wrong in reviews or there was a revision.

my manual clearly says carbon forks and they don't sound like the frame when tapped

That’s fine but the cycling enthusiasts on this forum are not representative of the wider public and their buying habits.

Just look at the computer section of this forum. Every man and his dog has a high end PC where as the vast majority of computers bought are low end, dual or quad core with integrated graphics and 4gb or 8gb ram that costs £400.

My road bike cost £600, it’s mid range, all Shimano parts, still 10kg and comes with significantly better brakes and tyres than your average Halfords/cycle king/Amazon China special. It would stop in half the distance of my cheap £300 folder I used to take on the train.

For £1k your looking at 1 or 2 tier of compensation above mine and only 2 off what the pros use.

My emtb was £4500, my other bike is a gravel bike (road bike with chunky tyres) was £1500 with carbon forks, grx 2x groupset, hydraulic discs. I commute daily on either bike depending on weather (harsh weather its the mtb, otherwise gravel bike), I also mix up my commute by going off road, or taking the long way around otherwise it gets boring doing the same roads day in day out.

Was riding along the canal towpath earlier, just passing Emma Bridgewater, and some absolute lunatic came belting along on an homebrew eBike at one hell of a rate of knots. He was easily doing way above 20mph, not peddling either and just on the throttle. Seriously thought about helping him get a wash in the Caldon, but by the time I'd thought about it he had whooshed past and very nearly took a woman and pushchair out under the Lichfield St. bridge.

It wasn't me, I'm actually a very conscientious eBike/cyclist rider.
I've learnt to give way to prats in motor vehicles even though I shouldn't have to, it just makes for an easier ride.

pedestrian collision with a ebike looks much worse to me than an escooter - despite front wheel absorbing some shock, higher cofG and wheel gyroscopic effect make it harder to parry a bike off to one side or other, whereas I think an escooter rider could come off pretty badly himself
.. when I encounter escooters whilst out running, it is like a jousting match.

I'm doing a double take a £4.5K emtb weighs 25KG ... is that a beefed up/optional battery

It's a heavy duty, full suspension enduro bike built for taking big hits, it's one step down from a downhill bike which are designed for extreme punishment. They are tanks on 2 wheels pretty much :)

I'd have thought that's pretty standard. Doubt the cheaper emtb's are anything other than steel construction. Plus motor, battery, esc. Anything below 20kg seems to be much more expensive.

To get below 20kg your looking for premium parts, carbon fibre etc. One of the lightest emtb bikes is the specialized turbo levo sl which is around 17kg, a bargain at £12.5k.

It's also significantly less powerful than the above mentioned haibike with just 35nm of Torque, vs 85/90nm.

Are those twist and go throttle controlled and over 250w?

If Yes, it's illegal, unless its a new model classified by EU L1e-A (which it obviously isn't) which allows twist and go up to 1000w, but still limited to 15.5mph.

Are they limited to 15.5mph?

If no, then it's illegal or classified as a speed pedelec which requires a licence, insurance and mot, and a helmet is mandatory.

yes looks top end for them - is the weight mainly the electrification, 10kg battery (cooling?) and motor; my, old, 531 commuters probably 13kg
I see they have, what looks to me, equally comptetent bikes at £2.5K haibike-hardseven-5 65Nm of torque ! when you think most ev's are less than 10x that.

My converted Trek 4300 weighs 25kg
My converted Trek 7.5FX weighs 19kg
saddles a bit low, too ?

250 watt motors, 15.5mph, I can use the throttle through grandfather laws (had them 9 years) but according to those who know on Pedelecs Forums they are technically illegal.
Some legal bod has wrote a good article on there about it but also accepts Coppers won't do anything unless you're being a prat.
I was involved in an accident in front of Coppers and one of them actually said "You've got a legal motor on it" before I was taken to A&E and my bike stored by somebody else.

Definitely not for me, I'm basically disabled and use them like mobility scooters.
I need to be able to stop and stand up on my tippy toes while seated, I am small but the frames are only 17".
Once off my bike I have to walk with one or two walking sticks.

Funny thing is I've been trying to sell my road bike that was professionally setup for me 11 years ago and I can't even get on it so I do know what you're on about and you are correct.
