E2160 vs E4500

i don't really see the need to get an E4 series when these chips clock so well... and i don't really think the lower cache makes as much of a difference as it's made out to be.

put simply, the '60 flies at 3ghz, and it's not difficult to get either.

E2160 is a good chip for overclocking but it's probably easier to get a E2200 / E2180 and clock that if you guys are kind of new to overclocking. Go for it!

E4500 is a waste of money if you compare it to E2xxx in my opionion anyway

Wow, I can only get my e2160 to 2.34GHz (260*9). If I push it higher, the BIOS settings auto-reset to stock speed. It's on an old Gigabyte 945PL board, so would a motherboard upgrade allow me to get those >3GHz speeds?

I think so

P35 motherboard should be good. You can get a Gigabyte P35-DS3 second hand pretty cheap and that will do the trick, unless your CPU turns out to be really ****** but I doubt that. Check if your CPU is a revision M0, if so you should be fine. To check, download CPU-Z.

I won a E2180 on the bay today for £32. Bargain!!! I have a E4300 in my second pc that will hit 3.4Ghz but due to motherboard restrictions (265 is the max fsb

, must get a better board sometime) i can only run it at 2.4Ghz. The higher multi of the E2180 should get me higher. I will bench the pair and compare them and then my son gets the slowest to replace his P4.

I build all the pc's for my friends and family. Anybody (kids included, 16 and 20 yrs old) come to me for help. Makes a change i suppose from the kids being in the know. My dad on the other hand is hopeless. He can't even set up a VCR and he has a mobile phone that he does'nt even know how to send a text. In fact the first time i said about texts he said what's one of those.

He just didn't get it. He has a 3.4ghz pentium d and he just didn't believe that my 4200x2 2.2ghz had similar preformance

The best I've had my E2200 stable at was 3.33ghz , and that was with crazy volts (1.58) and was running pretty hot too :/.
Usually those chips need massive volts after 3.0ghz. I think the E2160 OCs better or I just got a bad chip.

I can hit 3.5Ghz at that voltage but I never got round to priming it for stability at that speed. 3.2Ghz straight out of the box. A quick prime showed me it needed a little bit more than stock volts and next day after it arrived it was primed and ready to go

I don't think you can say a E2160 clocks better then a E2180 / E2200, it really depends on the individual chip you get...

Also I find a pretty performance increase between 3.0Ghz and 3.2Ghz but I don't know if it's worth the extra voltage, 3.0Ghz @ 1.325 and 3.2Ghz @ 1.525

ofcourse the chip is dirt cheap so... I dunno

if I fry it I might get a nice E7200 but I'd rather have that drop a bit in price....

git. got my 2180 from OcUK last week and it takes 1.425v set in the bios for 3ghz. i can't get 3.2ghz for love nor money - well i probably could if i had better cooling. i had to give up testing at 1.5v because temps under load were a little toasty.

I agree!

My first e2160 @ 3.2ghz sat around 70c under load using an ultra 120 extreme.

Second one (bought from Devious) did 3.6 and even under water sat in the mid 60s.

These are some hot runners!

My e4500 doesn't seem great so far. Ideally I was after 10x333, but I think this looks unlikey, as I couldn't get to that last night.

Will keep tweaking though.

That particular chip should do 3ghz with less than 1.4v set in a Gigabyte BIOS.

I had it Prime95 stable at 3.45ghz and only 1.47v under load. It's the best E2140 in the E2*00 thread here.
