So you now need to use the Wiimote AND the new controller for the WiiU?

Constantly switching between the two. Or have they abandoned the gimmick that is motion gaming?

I'm sorry, I wanted to like this, but it is an absolutley brutal idea.

I took away from the presser that it is more of an either/or on which controller you use

It's backwards compatible with the Wii controller, so it is optional depending on the game.

Yeah, looks like the Tablet essentially adds extra functions to Wii Sports which is an interesting concept. So could just be backwards compatible but also allows you to add new features through the use of the new controller.

Which "gamer" sits on a tablet playing a game for hours on end?

They are trying to sell to casual and gamers. I can't see myself or any other gamer I know sitting down for a half day session on that thing.

Like I have with ass creed and many other games in the past.

Think about that was shown in that example video, it was simply Wii Sports from the original Wii, the tablet seemed to add additional features to certain aspects of it.

I doubt in the majority of games on the console you will be using them in true tandem. You won't be doing this in most of the titles featured.

I love the idea of a screen in the controller for display of maps, weapon selection, inventory, etc. But it's going to be rather expensive when one gets game rage.

Which goes onto my other point about ditching the core mechanic of the Wii. There is no IR on the new controller. So you either need to use both, or the Wii U games won't feature what was the main selling point of the Wii.

Not really...you can use them in tandem as shown, what Nintendo have done is allow consumers to keep their Wiimotes and Nunchucks and use them on the new system as controllers also, not exactly a bad thing if you ask me.

It's a very good idea.

There's absolutely nothing wrong with the Wii remote and nunchuck as a standard control system; it's not even as motion controls are needed. It's as good as the PS3 controller at the very least!

It also means that the ~80m (off the top of my head) Wii owners, many of whom aren't 'hardcore gamers', aren't alienated by the tech advance.

I can see the thinking behind it:

1) Hardware that is cheap enough to make a profit from, but no longer (massively) outdated. Bring in the 3rd parties.
2) Can slap the 'HD' badge on now every man and his dog own a HD TV.
3) Tap into the tablet market (at least the appearance) which I think is the big draw for existing 'casuals'.

I bet the new controller is pretty light, probably comfortable to rest on your knees whilst you play. I don't imagine it's chock full of powerful hardware.

Did they say it didn't have IR? It must have a rear facing camera at the very least.

I am saying that just based on the video that was shown that had a Wii-U and sensor bar in it

Because people who bought the Wii, like me, soon realized that it is a gimmicky piece of ****. Hence me staying well away from anything like that again, such as Kinect.

But again this is all sheer speculation from both our parts, who's to say you need to use the tablet to enable Wiimote+Nunchuck use? We really don't know, to me from the shots of the TV etc it showed a sensor bar, similar to what the Wii itself has now so no need to use the Tablet when playing Wii games like Wii Sports etc.

The conference gave everyone an idea but we really don't know how it's all going to work together yet.

I have a Wii. It isn't gimmicky at all, I love it.

The Wii isnt gimmicky, oh please. Out of 10 poeple I can guarantee you 8 of them have a Wii gathering dust under the tv, it was and still is the worst console i have ever played and ive played a few in my time.

The new console looks rubbish, no specs so it isnt powerfull, its just another gimmick and most of the general public (95% muppets ) will fall for it and buy it.
