E5200 Overclocking and performance comparison.

Well I got my E5200, went to run it in my MSI P6N Platinum (which has the lastest v1.7 bios & MSI does list the E5200 as being supported) but it won't boot with it !. I've now found out that some early versions don't support it! grrrr:mad:.
Awaiting replie from MSI atm.:rolleyes:

Btw mbrd works fine with an E6420.

I am having a play with the one in my missus's PC again, can get into windows at 4ghz but a little unstable in games, gonna push the volts some more, might have to go to 1.45v in bios, know you shouldn't but its a cheap chip so dont really matter.
Nah wont play ball in this old DS4 board, dont have much volts to give it. good chip though does 3.8ghz in this board all day long, so cant complain.
Would love to get it stable at the magic 4ghz though.
Waste really as it never gets turned on, not bad spec really has a 3870x2 aswell, she prefers her Macbook, I just put it together with the bits I had lying around just had to add the E5200 to it.

I might have to crack open the bonnet on my E5200 machine and give it another whirl, the first chip I had fell over around 3.8GHz but I've got a second E5200 running now which I still didn't test properly! . . . flippen girlfriends really eat into ones overclocking time! :o;)

It's 8 hours Orthos stable, couldn't be bothered doing any more:

I'll do an Intel Burn Test tomorrow, not heard of that one before.

My setup is:

C2D E5200
Thermalright Ultra 120 Extreme, 5V Yate Loon
Abit IP-35 Pro XE
4Gb Kingston PC6400
ATI HD4870 1Gb
Corsair HX 520W

All in a Lian Li PC-A05, with a couple of 5V Yate Loon case fans. I was going to lap the Thermalright as it's noticeably concave on the base, but it seems to be doing its job okay for now.
 
I have given up on getting mine any further now. Over the weekend i tried for a higher clock and despite trying a high 1.475v vcore cannot get stable beyond 3.6Ghz. Quite poor really or are we just expecting too much from this architecture these days? I mean, i have had a E2180 to 3.6Ghz, a E4300 to 3.4Ghz, a E6600 to 3.8Ghz, a Q6600 to 3.8Ghz, a E2140 to 3.2Ghz and now my E8500 to 4.5Ghz. The E5200 is rather poor comparing to that lot.

Anyway, i have now settled at 3.33Ghz with 1.26v. It's only a general purpose pc so i don't really need the power and this option uses less volts.
 
I won't find out what my E5200 can do for weeks!, the RMA for my MSI P6N could take upto 6wks! :(

Odd that these don't o/c so well as many other 45nm Core 2s.

What cfm are the yate loons rated at? Ive heard their pretty good fans, nice oc btw. :D

I'm not sure what their CFM is, I don't really tend to pay much attention to manufacturers' specs. The most important thing to me is that they're silent at 5V, at which speed they push easily enough air to keep the system stable. As long as I ignore the temperatures I'm happy.:p
 
It depends on the model. There are three different models of 120mm standard Yate Loons but the most common is the D12SL-12 which are rated at 47cfm at 1300rpm. They are very noisey at full speed though. I have 4 of them doing 900rpm on my fan controller. They are more or less silent at that speed while still shifting a decent amount of air.
 
Really impressed by all the work, I have jsut built an E5200 system and as said, it is similar price to E22** so was an easy choise.

I bought one of these last week along with Asa P5QL Pro and 4 gig of TwinX 6400CS.

I havent overclocked a chip for years, last time I did was my od Opteron which was so easy it was untrue. I tried upping the fsb to 300 and it wouldnt boot, tried 270 and still wouldnt boot so left it at standard.

Can anyone give me any basic pointers just to get it up to a reliable overclock.

Have you put your ram on a suitable ratio?

Make sure all your RAM timings and voltages are set to their SPD values.

If that doesn't work, perhaps try boosting your Vcore to 1.25V or so. I wouldn't have thought you'd need that much for a modest overclock but you need to try.

I found my E5200 even easier to overclock than my Opteron, but I think I got lucky. :)

I left everything as standard only ried upping the fsb. is that the problem, would that alone cause the memory to run to quick, or you think it just needed a bit more juice

Try the RAM divider first. I don't know what your default divider is, but make sure that your new FSB multiplied by the RAM divider you choose doesn't exceed your RAM's stated speed.
 
I was getting mid sixties at 4Ghz under Orthos testing. I got 80 when doing an Intel Burn test. That's with a Thermalright Ultra 120 Extreme.
