Because PC hardware is a real puzzle
Stop with your elitist BS. It won't work well in Motors.
Also you say you went for functionality over form?
When infact you have near lost full functionality from a vital part of the car from the dodgy hookup. I'd value that more but hey.
OllyM and paradigm are welcome posters to my thread.
I know more about PC tech than both of them put together 1000x over,
This includes how electronics behave under severe temps, wether it be hot or cold.
They know more about cars.
Their views are from one stand point only and thats aesthetics of my install.
Everything else about it will be out of their depth.
A car pc is physical install of components.
Hacking the software etc.. to work is beyond them both.
Hence their frustration.
As a technical exercise I think it's great. Would prefer the integrated screen, but easy can always do that at a later date.
What software do you have on it? Does it have GPS as well?
I agree with it being good from a technical exercise point of view.. of course like most, I would prefer an OEM look, but each to their own..
Shame the threads derailed somewhat with the angry mob.. in these 'diary' style threads, I can't see why people can't just post their negative opinion in a civilised manner, and leave the thread if it's not for them, but when you see someone's opening gambit as "I agree it looks like a turd" and go downhill from there they just look like some sad/angry loner with nothing better to do with their time, which isn't like that poster at all..
It looks turd IMO
Definitely agree the screen should be integrated better. When I had a 3 series I decided against a cheapo car PC install because, well I'd just spent 15k on a car and I didn't want it to look gash inside. I went for the OEM nav/bluetooth which I found a far better integrated solution with voice control, steering wheel control for scrolling through your phone book, brilliant iPod integration with the Intravee, TV tuner etc. Also it actually added value to the car when I came to trade it in, I'd say I made my money back (I removed the bluetooth module, tv tuner etc). The only downside is no postcode input, but apart from that the navigation itself is brilliant, I don't understand why it has a bad reputation when it's perfectly fine. You can get speed cameras on there and there are even ways to get postcodes working now with hacked DVDs.
The other thing I'd say is having a clip on the vents makes the car far more likely to get broken into compared to having a screen in the dash.
I think i may have to attack my car after seeing this, nice work
To come up with that from a dead laptop and some bits.....fair play to you, more than I could do. Would love something like this.
I think it's good, I wouldn't want to change anything OEM, and this seems like a decent compromise. I hang my iPod and XDA Stellar off cradles, not really fussed about cables...you sit in a car for comfort!
