Easyriders Car PC Project

Also you say you went for functionality over form?

When infact you have near lost full functionality from a vital part of the car from the dodgy hookup. I'd value that more but hey.

No. I stand by the fact it's a dodgy hookup and comprimises car functionality. You like it great. I'm offering constructive advice as is everyone else in this thread. Be boring if we all loved it. Actually I do love it but the screen is DIY jobby. Sort that out and job done. Opinion offered now I'm off for my kip

Location : In Denial ?

Amen to that.

OllyM and paradigm are welcome posters to my thread.

I know more about PC tech than both of them put together 1000x over,

This includes how electronics behave under severe temps, wether it be hot or cold.

They know more about cars.

Their views are from one stand point only and thats aesthetics of my install.

Everything else about it will be out of their depth.

A car pc is physical install of components.

Hacking the software etc.. to work is beyond them both.

Hence their frustration.

Lol. I'll put quite a large wager on you NOT knowing more about PC architecture, software development, and custom hardware/software integrations.

Its kind of been my family background for as long as any of them care to remember. If I COULDN'T "hack" the front end or apps to work, I'd be having a very idiotic day.

NOTHING about this project, physical hardware, car integration or software tweaking would be beyond me, ta.

I do however respect the work that you would have had to put in to getting it all to function fluidly, but how you can stamp such a broad statement on to me when you don't even know what I do or what my background is, well that is laughable.

There are undiscovered Tribes in the heart of the Peruvian Jungle that knew

paradigm,Tom|Nbk,OllyM and [TW]Fox would hate it.:p

Here is a pic again for you all to get upset about! :p

As a technical exercise I think it's great. Would prefer the integrated screen, but easy can always do that at a later date.

What software do you have on it? Does it have GPS as well?

Cheers its nice to have some positive views :)

I haven't ruled out a centre dash install. It does indeed look better than the

setup currently. But at this moment in time I am happy with it and thats all

that counts.:)

Its running XP

Road Runner Front end
Simplistique Skin.
GPS software is IGO8

Definitely agree the screen should be integrated better. When I had a 3 series I decided against a cheapo car PC install because, well I'd just spent 15k on a car and I didn't want it to look gash inside. I went for the OEM nav/bluetooth which I found a far better integrated solution with voice control, steering wheel control for scrolling through your phone book, brilliant iPod integration with the Intravee, TV tuner etc. Also it actually added value to the car when I came to trade it in, I'd say I made my money back (I removed the bluetooth module, tv tuner etc). The only downside is no postcode input, but apart from that the navigation itself is brilliant, I don't understand why it has a bad reputation when it's perfectly fine. You can get speed cameras on there and there are even ways to get postcodes working now with hacked DVDs.

The other thing I'd say is having a clip on the vents makes the car far more likely to get broken into compared to having a screen in the dash.

I agree with it being good from a technical exercise point of view.. of course like most, I would prefer an OEM look, but each to their own..

Shame the threads derailed somewhat with the angry mob.. in these 'diary' style threads, I can't see why people can't just post their negative opinion in a civilised manner, and leave the thread if it's not for them, but when you see someone's opening gambit as "I agree it looks like a turd" and go downhill from there they just look like some sad/angry loner with nothing better to do with their time, which isn't like that poster at all..

To come up with that from a dead laptop and some bits.....fair play to you, more than I could do. Would love something like this.

I think it's good, I wouldn't want to change anything OEM, and this seems like a decent compromise. I hang my iPod and XDA Stellar off cradles, not really fussed about cables...you sit in a car for comfort!

You've got a lot further than I did with my aborted CarPC attempt (I went the opposite way - spent a fortune on the PC itself - Opus 150W PSU, wireless wake-on-lan-capable PCI card, expensive soundcard, etc), I never got around to fitting mine! So, kudos for that....

That said I really don't like the way you've done it... if you're gonna do something like this you really have to make it look OEM imo. Having clip-on monitors, especially in a "posh car", just ruins the interior.

On the subject of theft - do people even steal units that look integrated? I'd wager that it's more likely that someone will try and nick an obviously aftermarket monitor if it looks like it just clips on vs something that looks like it's built into the dash.

I think what easy said was that the monitor can be taken off and out of the car easily to prevent theft. I like the oem feel in the pics link posted a couple of pages back but the screen position would be a bit too low for my liking.

Thanks:)

The thing is its fully tweakable. There is nothing stopping me putting the

screen in the centre console at a later date.

It looks turd IMO

You just have to laugh at the limited vocab of some posters and get on with:p

I know have a complete multimedia hub in my car.

Thats what I set out to do.

And thats what I achieved.

The centre console will 99% happen but not right now

One of the reasons why i didtched my CARPC was that it looked a bit nickable and the BT never worked properly. Its a lovely idea from a geek pov, and something to do, but in reality something akin to a Pioneer AVIC is a way better option, by the time youve got it looking good, its costs just as much as a decent sat nav option.

How are you powering the Laptop? wont the cold cranking current eventually fry the thing, id didnt think the DC-DC psu's were robust enough, its normally jus a uber cheap SMPSU in their.

Would it not be better to ditch the current BMW HU and pop a motorised screen in instead? i agree with the others tbh that does look gash. The mondeo one posted int he 1st page looks spot on.

I think i may have to attack my car after seeing this, nice work

Cheers:)
