I realise that the mains outlet socket type is different to to that which europe uses, but then that varies everywhere, and doesn't make something "weird"?

that depends on what you need and what you already have.

if you want wooden flooring or carpet? or do you already have it?

if your building from scratch including the actual garage (im assuming it was a garage before it was converted) then your talking upwards of £15K

I have them speakers working in Zone 2 off my onkyo 876 perfectly.
