Easyrider's Playon HD mini review thread.

Let me play tonight and check all is ok and then I will upload it to my dropbox, I do not want to be responsible for bricking anyone's box. One thing I will say is the same bluray rips that stuttered under ryan firmware is still the same with this so it is defo my network or the ability of the 10/100 switch in the box.

Update: The Video wall is quite nice as it now takes only 3 clicks total to play a movie, if you have no thumbgen/about sheet in your movie folder and 4 if you have one in there. Gui overall is pretty much the same type of thing as per most realtek players on SDK3. Now if the same person/persons who unlocked this could cobble in the intenet feeds from the latest Ryan firmware I would be very happy.

Info on setting up the video wall, found here

All setup and working :)

Personally I feel it's more responsive than the standard SDK 3 firmware and looks more professional as well.

Re: the stuttering - If you have NFS available I've found you can get around this by mounting the NFS share using the TCP option.

I use this guide which allows you to mount network drives as if they were local at startup.

The mount line provided in the example script is:

Code:
WHAT="nfs -o nolock 192.168.1.101:/media/movie /tmp/usbmounts/sda1"

However, if you replace it with:

Code:
WHAT="nfs 192.168.1.101:/media/movie /tmp/usbmounts/sda1 -o proto=tcp,nolock"

the NFS share is mounted using TCP and I've found eliminates all stuttering and lag apart from the more demanding mkv files (in my experience the only file that still struggles is a Transformers 2 mkv whilst playing the mass fight IMAX scene)

I really want to love this Mede8er firmware but the video wall is not something I'm prepared to go to the trouble of setting up.

It means completely reorganising my media and quite frankly I cba :p. It would also leave the media in what I would consider and illogical state when accessing via my other PC's.

If people aren't using the movie jukebox feature (YAMJ) of the AC Ryan this is definitely something you should try/consider.

It works exactly like the older SDK 3 firmware’s but looks far more polished. The only superfluous options I could find were relating to accessing the internal hard drive / card reader and a format internal hard drive option.

I know what you mean regarding the Video wall it would mean resizing all my existing covers and that would interfere with media browser, the covers will look very low res, if scale at all. For me it was more a case of doing it and seeing the options available to me.

My Mini2 is up for sale here http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showthread.php?t=18255975 if anyone is after one... Cant be bothered as it doesnt really offer me anything that i cant do on a PS3... If not will send it back.. Havnt got the patience to be a Beta tester for something i have paid good money for..

Send it back:confused:...why not do that and get a full refund rather than lose money on here selling it unless its past its return period.

Nah i can send it back.. I buy at trade price so thought i would see if i could pass it on to someone who had more patience than me and was willing to wait till it sorted.. And save them a bit of cash in the process...

Ahhh right...well id buy it off you but i have the first playon mini and it works perfectly fine for my needs at the moment.

Have been using the unlocked med8er firmware on my Mini for about a week now. Cannot believe how much better it is than the AC Ryan firmware. The menu may not look as nice but its a hell of a lot nicer than the previous versions and actually responds fairly instantly to button presses. The video wall was easy to set up and now have 2 shortcuts, one to movies on usb permanently attached to playon and one to my laptops movie folder which streams full 1080p blu-rays flawlessly. The AC Ryan firmware would play 720p ok but stutter fairly frequently on 1080p.

Would recommend it to anyone.

Thinking of buying the Mini2 for one of the living room, currently have a PS3 in my bedroom streaming across gigabit with PS3 Media Server running on the PC.

Will it work with PS3MS or should I use different software? Any issues with the Mini2 or should I get the first one?

It should work with any UPNP server however you'd be best streaming directly from a network share and letting the box do all the decoding.

I have no experience of the Mini2 so can't comment on that but the first incarnation works perfectly and plays everything I've asked it too.

Ah I see, that'll work. :)

Got some Amazon vouchers that need to be spent, can't think of a better purchase right now!
