Easyrider's Playon HD mini review thread.

Have installed it on my Mini, GUI looks very slick but still similar amount of clicks to get to specific places, there are shortcuts scattered about it seems via movies, music and photo's however.

Main problem is the speed. It seems to take about 3-6 seconds between each button press, they stated with the release that it was known to be slow and stated it was down to the slower processor in the older players but I do find this irritating as it was announced in 2009 so they should have based it on the older processors. Especially irriating as I only bought my Mini about a month ago and the Mini 2 was released 2 weeks later for barely anymore £!

Oh well, thumbgen seems to work flawlessly now so am pleased with that, strangely cycling with that is about 5x faster than the normal menus!

Very much this.

Any one using the mini to playback over a network I'd suggest sticking with the old firmware for now.

I can only guess that the larger processing/memory footprint of the new firmware is detracting from the already limited processing going on for the network, as larger MKV files (15GB+) seem to be a non-starter for me as the box is constantly skipping/lagging.

I appreciate the effort that's been put in to make the new interface but it seems painstakingly obvious at the moment they're trying to eke performance out of the box when it's not there to be eked :p

Back to 4824 for me until the next release where speed improvements have been promised.

Hmmm thats a shame..was planning to install the new GUI on my mini but if there are speed issues then thats a no no for me as i stream Blu ray rips over my network and cant afford any slowdowns:(.

Screw it i might just install it and see how it fares...if its no good then ill just go back to my original firmware.

I'd give it a go but I'd prepare for the inevitable switch back :p

Yep going by what some people are saying on the forums, it does seem to be the case...oh well ill give it a go later tonight and see if its any good....its a shame that they couldnt optimise it for the earlier models...hopefully they will optimise it in a later firmware if they can that is.

Dont know if anyone is wanting to try but apparently a second reflash has improved the speed, havent had a chance to try it myself but might be worth a go. Unsure if its via the standard or safe mode flash but I haven't had a chance to try yet.

Right well i finally got round to installing the new GUI on my playon mini...looks really nice and as for the speed issue or issues??...well i havent noticed anything out of the ordinary...in fact its around the same speed when navigating through the menu's....my 1080p blu ray rips play perfectly fine with no slowdown or stuttering...mind you i didnt really get a chance to play around with it as i had to go out for a few hrs. But ill be watching a few movies tonight to see if it does suffer from any slowdowns/stutters over my network.

The new GUI really looks the part though, they have tidied it up quite a bit and the colours and menu system look much much better now.

Has anyone one managed to find the V4 unlocked Mede8er firmware which will run on the playon with full remote compatability? I have only managed to try the patriot box office ones, which flash ok, but no remote.

No, what we are on about is the Mede8er V4 gui/firmware which is still built on sdk3 , it has a much better implemented video wall to get straight to your movie folders, a hell of a lot less clicks! So far I have tried the unlocked version that people are using on the Patriot Box Office , but alas remote functionality is lost. I have a another one which is claimed to retain all remote as they both share the same remote, which I will try tonight.

Nice one matey i would be interested in how you get on with this... If its still a no go i will send it back and stump up the rest of the cash for a Mede8er.
