eBay just removed fees for private sellers (Except motors)

Thank god. I have only used it once recently and they took a £70 chunk of it, then the penny dropped why everything is on fb marketplace now. It'll be great if I never have to use marketplace again so I hope this works out for them

Interesting idea from Ebay, but I fear it's too little too late!

I'm not saying I think Ebay are going to fold anytime soon, but are they really that relevant anymore with all the alternatives like FB market place?

"However, buyers are set to face a charge. How it will be applied is yet to be determined though it will take effect early next year, the company said."

Will be interesting to see what they come up with this one, how's that going to incentivise buyers to use their platform with additional charges to the product their buying :D

Unless I'm stupid, This would be like Asda charging you to shop with them. On top of buying a loaf.

Tbf I think it'll be more like deliveroo and vinted with their service fees

vinted already charge the buyer, but it’s just called the buyer protection policy. Several times a problem has arisen and vinted wash their hands of it and say it’s couriers fault and courier say their contract is with vinted. So while it probably covers some things it’s actually their fee.

So long as eBay don’t go mad and charge a %age and just make it a reasonable flat fee they’ll be quids in.

FB market place is dire. For anything high value it's just a waste of time.

For junk it's great.

This makes the no seller fees pointless.

If you just shift from buy to sell I suspect the top line market price won't change and sellers will just have to drop their prices.

Its probably better from psychology standpoint. It's what vinted do.

You see the price.. Think oooh. Then get a whack on top for fees. But you may already be mentally committed. Probably sensible marketing

Since the fees were removed, I've listed 24 items. 23 items have sold and of those I've had problems with just two. One arrived not working and when returned exhibited the same problem but I was able to RMA. The other a buyer didn't update their address on their account, RM couldn't deliver, so it got returned to me but then has been lost in the post.

Neither of which are a huge PITA, but the latter has requested a full refund inc. postage so I'm down £4 despite the postage issue being their fault. eBay only lets me refund the full amount as they've opened a not received claim.

Despite those minor issues, it's been a good place to offload my old kit and as RM are happy to collect free of charge it takes very little effort.

Yeah I've also taken this as an opportunity to sell.
And actually the prices haven't really come down due to no fees.
So yeah this has been good.

Here we go eBay, the master plan has been revealed!

How the Buyer Protection fee works

  • The fee will be included in the item price from private sellers, so there are no surprises at checkout.
  • Buyers will pay up to 4% of the item price, plus £0.75.** For example, when they see an item for £20, the fee of £1.49 will already be part of the price.
  • The fee is lower on higher-priced items over £300, and there's a cap on the total amount they'll pay.
  • For items from business sellers, they'll get the Buyer Protection benefits at no extra cost.

So essentially, you need to spend money to spend your money, and this spending is for your protection. They don’t want you being scammed unless it’s them scamming you, for your protection. Nice.

Don't understand? So sellers need to pay this fee?

No, buyers do. It's added to the price you see. So sellers will need to discount or prices all bump up.

It's a flat fee, so prices on very cheap goods have gone astronomical.

The biggest insult is needing to wait until AFTER delivery to get paid. 14 DAYS for untracked or if the postie forgets to scan it. This is the stupid kind of **** that killed Mercari.
